I have both, but haven't dared start up V9 for a real project yet.

The SD card can be had cheap used, and the old DL Extreme HD (w/o 3G SDI) can be had for abt $500 new.

I am contemplating the Decklink Studio with VPro 9.0b. Looks very attractive if only I could be certain that it works with Vegas.

All I need it for is to monitor timeline to an HDMI connected HD TV.

I think most folks have problems using these cards for capturing.

We have HD Extremes and SD cards.
We use them everyday, all day, for monitoring to SDI monitors and output to SDI tape decks, with Vegas.
They work flawlessly with 8c (after copying the files to the correct directories - search forum for how to set them up). They were 'officially'(?) supported under version 7d, but not 8 or 9. But can be made to work correctly under 8c.
Currently I believe they can't be made to work under V9, but I hope, if the whisper I hear is true, that Blackmagic & Sony are maybe trying to get them working again. They are a brilliant combination, and for the folk that work more in the HD - DVD area, the Intensity card would be ideal.
'Tis very frustrating presently to be held back from editing in our current workflow with V9. Vegas keeps looking for "Pro" status, but until they get a good cheap SDI workflow it struggles to achieve it.

Thing is, Vegas Pro 9 claims in its features that it can do capture from HD-SDI with the right hardware... But NO WHERE have I ever seen what the "right hardware" is...

Thanks for the input.

In addition to output we are contemplating capture from a "live" 1080 studio feed in SDI into Vegas 9b.

We have Adobe Premier Pro (CS4) and I read that works.

I've also read the card comes with its own capture utility, but I do not see that on the Black Magic Web site.

Or if someone has another suggestion pass it along.

Thanks.

I don't have either card but I get the impression that the AJA Xena cards work better...but you really need to get someone to step up and say so.

The BMD cards seem to have driver problems and no official support so if you emailed BMD with a question they might just tell you that Vegas isn't supported (meaning they won't answer your questions)

Both manufacturers have capture utilities and I'm pretty sure you could print to tape directly from their software. The question is what features Vegas can use directly. At the barest minimum you want to use the card for monitoring.

cspvideo:
If you are content to to use vegas8c, you can capture directly into Vegas via the Decklink cards. We use batch capture from VTR decks and this works without any problems.
As it was said in one of the other replies, you would probably find it easier to just use the capture utility that comes with the card - in Blackmagics case - Media Express. (this will also output to tape as well)
BTW make sure you have Hard Drives that can sustain HD capture.
We use striped 2x500GB standard sata drives and get 200MB per sec. which is easily enough for what you want.
Only reason I'm pushing BM cards is that we have so many of them, and the thought of paying for a whole heap of much more expensive AJA cards doesn't appeal.

Thank you. I'm satisfied that I can use the cards. And thanks for the hard drive tips.
