Black MPEG?

Help!

Dopey newbie questions.

I have Vegas 4.0e. I import a MPEG 1 file that plays fine in every Windows Media etc. But in Vegas it plays fine for 30 to 50 seconds and then goes black video - sound ok.

If I stop and put the cursor just past the point it plays fine for a while then black screen with sound. Worse - it renders this way too.

What is going on?

You got some weird codec for that mpeg and vegas have trouble to read the entire file. If you have XP the in media director you can render as avi and drop to vegas. The other way is to find media converter and convert to avi then edit in vegas.

Sounds great - I am running XP - where is media director?

Or maybe a source for another prefered renderign tool?

Are you entirely sure it's mpeg-1 and not a wmv file?
If its is a wmv file you can download Windows Media Encoder for free and re-encode it with keyframes every 2 secs, that'll fix it.

You may also be able to use that encoder to fix the problem.
An alternative might be TMPGEnc to restream, I think the mpeg-1 version is still free.
