BlackMagic in Vegasland.

I have added the Blackmagic camera to my consideration list since the annoucement of MFT mount version. (which includes the FS100, and AF100) but I am concerned with the gotchas potential with Vegas. I have downloaded and installed the Avid Codecs and Apple Codecs.

My questions are will Vegas be able to include DNxHd, Prores, and CinemaDng media on the timeline as it does with other media types. Will effects plugsin be able to operate on these media types. Will be able to render to DnXhd, Prores, or CinemaDng (I don't see how at the moment)?

If anyone can think of any other gotchas please list them on this thread, much appreciation for any input.

Many here have used DNxHD without issue.
Prores can be read but not written on Windows PCs.
I believe CinemaDNG should work in Vegas but not 100% certain about this.

Keep in mind some of those codecs use up expensive SSDs very quickly.

Apple maintains control of ProRes and will not give it up to writing on a PC - more true tommorrow than it was yesterday. That is why we say the company of BLackMagic is really focused productivity wise on the Mac rather than the PC workflow.

There has been considerable question about the offering of CinemaDNG and very very few answers about where and how it would work..I personally would not gamble on that format for now.

DNXHD is your viable option beside uncompressed in the VegasPro timeline.

Prores can be read but not written on Windows PCs.

A user on Creative Cow figured out how to do this using FFmpeg.
His tutorial (subtitled because he's Russian) is at SONY Vegas: Batch Render + Events.
I cant vouch for its effectiveness as I've never tried it so if someone who has access to a Mac can try it and report back, that would be great.

rs170a: The reference you point out is truly interesting and proves several things, the Russians are still the master of reverse engineering and that VegasPro has its best market coverage in places most far away from the United States.

On the other hand for those who have dealt with FFmpeg library calls, it just isn't that easy - if it was, ProRes would be out of the container that Apple built around it long ago. I don't know the particulars of this case - but I would never install FFMPEG on my primary harddrive working partition with other codecs. It can cause serious havoc in places you would not expect. Getting a solution of this type has the real "devil" in the details. I think it could work - just install the whole apparatus of its calls on a different partition with your OS.

Maybe a "gotcha" could be the battery in the camera. You can't change the internal but have to carry external battery packs, otherwise I like the camera

I am also interested in getting a BM, battery is an issue and then you still have to go through the trauma of being ridden over by the lens bus.

FS700 looks more up my alley got lens already.
• Super Slo-Mo: 120 & 240fps at full res.
• Three built-in ND filters.
• PMW-EX1/EX3/F3-style cine gammas!!!!!

The SONY NEX VG900 is also out this year, 35m sensor in the VG Series with a good lens, motor zoom and rocker.
