BlackMagic Intensity Cards + Vegas?

BobbyMurcerFan wrote on 6/20/2007, 1:12 PM
I've been searching on this subject only to come up with confliciting information from this forum, BlackMagic's reps and other knowledgable people. Some say no, others say yes (with a few features not working), some say yes if certain drivers are used.

So, has anyone actually tried using a BM Intensity card with the current version of Vegas? Does it or doesn't it work?

Thanks A LOT! It's much appreciated!

From what I understand, vegas 6 supports the card but the support came to an end on vegas 7.

I wrote Black Magic an Email in search of info a while back and their claim was that Vegas is a little different from other programs and does not integrate as easily. Therefore assistance must come from Sony in order to properly integrate the card. Sony for what ever reason was not interested in continued support for the card in Vegas 7.

So... OFFICIALLY, the card is not support in Vegas 7... but UNOFFICIALLY... if it worked in Vegas 6 then it MAY work in Vegas 7 (I haven't tried)

I tried it and it currently will not work in v7 as a preview device.

I called BMD and they said they were working on drivers but didn't know when they'd be ready.

Tim,

I found this, perhaps it's of some help:

"All of the BlackMagic cards I have used included a standalone deck control application. I don't know if this would apply to the Intensity as it does not have RS422 machine control. The deck control app captures uncompressed video as Quicktime files with the BlackMagic codec. These play fine in Vegas provided you have the disk throughput for uncompressed and the codec properly installed.

If you are capturing from a camera such as the V1, I believe Connect HD can capture using the Intensity card directly to a cineform intermediate file. That is probably your best bet for getting an easily editable file into Vegas."

And here's a link on DVInfo.net discussing this very problem:

GOOD LUCK and PLEASE let us know what you findout!

Tim,

Have you tried using Intensity's own capture program and then just importing the file into Vegas? Apparently this is an option (I don't have the card, so I don't know for sure).

I got one in yesterday around 5 pm and only had about 30 minutes to play with it.

Didn't try to use it yet as an output device yet, but am understanding it probably won't work with V7 as a preview. There is hope for a V8 driver from an off record conversation, which is only someone's opinion, NOT a promise.

(my gut feeling is that Sony needs to be a little more pro active in this to get it done.)

Used the stand alone capture with HDMI input from HDV camera. Didn't work with shipped driver, but after downloading the latest driver from Black Magic it worked with Canon HDV20. Used a tape captured from my Canon A1 HDV camera on the HDV20.

Captured uncompressed ( 6.9?? GB per minute) and Vegas played it back. Will need high speed array for this.

There only other choice in their capture program is MJPEG. File was approximately 1/7 the size. Played back in Windows Media player, but when placed in a Vegas 7.0e timeline, only the audio showed up. Not sue what's going on there.

I was running out of play time, so only messed another 5 minutes and did a quick google search to no avail.

That's it for now. Will update when I have some more news.....

No. I got the card with the sole intention of being able to use it for a component video preview. (I only edit DV and P2 so I don't need more input options right now.)

Well, I pulled the trigger on an Intensity Pro card and it will be here on Tuesday. Has anyone had any luck using it in Vegas? I know it isn't integrated into Vegas, but has anyone been able to at least use its files in Vegas?

In anticipation of its arrival, I've been spending some time in Premiere v2.0 just to get back up to speed in case I want/need to do full 10-bit video editing. All I can say is; God, I hate Premiere!

I've talked to Blackmagic and they say that Sony has been "dragging their feet" in partnering with them to get the Intensity Pro integrated into Vegas. Hopefully, Sony will get their act together and get with Blackmagic and do whatever it takes to get it done. I do NOT want to use Premiere! It blows!

I thought based on my previous experience with it 5 years ago I was going to feel the same way but now running it on decent hardware I'm preferring it to Vegas in some ways. Sure it's a different beast and if I hadn't been forced to use it I wouldn't have even been looking at it but no I see many of it's tools are way more powerful than Vegas. There's a lot of Vegas that I also miss. Hard choice at the end of the day, just a pity there's so much that Vegas simply cannot do.
