Book page flipping effect

How to have the effect of flipping a book page.
The book lies open, with video on the righthand page.
The flip of the page reveals an underlying video on the next page.

This technique is done in story telling movies (for example, beginning of Shrek)

Do I need to shoot a flipping book and use it to mask a video on the open page?

Try the page peel transition available in V4 or VV3 with the optional 3d plug-in.

If I remember well, the opacity of the top page (doing the peeling) can be adjusted.

I'll re-explain.
Page peel just 'peels' the top layer, showing the bottom one.
I want the shot to see the entire book, having it's pages flipped (with or without hand).
I think of shooting myself flipping the book. My question is about overlaying the video to the flipped page. Is this a 3D request?

I believe you can do it by inserting a green page (green screen effect) cut to fit as the second page. That is the way I have seen it done in studios. Has to be the right green, though.

Seen the same sort of thing done with a letter being removed from an envelope. Pull out a green page, and do a green screen effect.

You can use Vegas Help on this, or do a search on this forum on GREEN.

Satish's 3DLE plugin would probably let you accomplish this. It's going to be quite a chore to visually sync the picture movement to the page movement though. Keep in mind that the 3DLE plugin will let you see through the back of a picture, so after the page passes the midpoint you'll have to mute the picture that just disappeared or end it's event, and then start or unmute the picture on the flipside.

How do they control shadows in chroma keying the green page?

By exercising great care in lighting placement. Lots of lights from all directions, mainly.

Just try the chroma keying. Its not that demanding with a book and a square green target on the page. I've done it with just a well lit room.
