Border FX strangeness

I have run into a strange issue with the Sony border FX. When I have pictures that extend beyond the frame on the top or bottom, and the picture is cropped and panned, a random border will appear on the bottom (but sometimes top- no idea why) for a few frames and then go away. I have an example here- you can see it at 0:01 on the bottom. When I remove the border FX, as in the 2nd part of the linked video, no mystery border appears. I've tried changing aspect ratios, bit rate, border type... any ideas? I suppose I could add borders in photoshop, but sometimes I don't want them, other times I do- just like to keep it simple and not have to juggle different versions of the same picture.

In your Video FX window, try switching your Border FX with Pan/Crop. I've had similar problems when applying a mask with a feathered edge, so I routinely place the Pan/Crop at the end of the Video FX chain. Worth a try.

When I put the border FX at the end of the chain, it only applies the border to the sides of the picture that are in the cropped frame, so the edges that are cropped don't have any effects applied to them and it looks terrible.

If so, here are a couple of screenshots. Make sure that you set your pan/crop preset to the aspect ratio of your project. I suspect you may have left it at Default.




Again, note that you apply the border effect first, followed by Pan/Crop. Hope this works for you.

Thanks for the reply- I have tried all of the available aspect ratios, it still happens. If I don't have any part of the picture out of frame, like your example, it works fine. It is only when part of the picture is off the frame on the top or bottom.

I think you've uncovered a Vegas bug. I was able to reproduce the mystery border. It seems to appear only on the lower border. Here is another example. It appears on roughly Frames 66-73, disappears and then the correct border finally appears. It's probably best to download the file since you can step through it.



I was able to reproduce this problem in Vegas 10 and 12 as well. Probably, the best thing to do is apply your border in Photoshop. Perhaps someone else could confirm this problem.

I did some more testing, it seems to happen more frequently when the pans are over 5 seconds, when the picture is also getting larger and the bottom is off-screen. But not always at first, though after fiddling around with ONLY the size and position of the picture, I can get it to happen all the time. I'll have to post screen shots later, not on my Video Box.

Problem Solved (I hope). The size of the image I was using for the last demo was 4821 x 3255 pixels (from a slide scan). I resized the image to 2661 x 1800 and the problem pretty much disappeared--no mystery border as seen in the last YT demo. I could just discern a few extra lines when the yellow border appeared if I stepped through it frame by frame. Further resizing to 1777 x 1200 eliminated it altogether. The size of the image seems to be the issue. In any case, try resizing your images to 1200 or 1800 pixels of vertical resolution (assuming you have an HD project). Vegas should NOT be doing this, but hopefully, this will get around the problem.
