Border on stills with Vegas Pro

Folks,

I have a video here http://www.vimeo.com/2553679 in which I used a lot of still photos and did some Pan/Croping.

Pan/Crop is what I used to create the top/bottom border in this video http://www.vimeo.com/2074575 but since I am using the Pan/Crop to actually Pan in the first video I cannot for the life of me figure out how to create that "always on" top and bottom black bar.

Can anyone make a suggestion? I found nothing searching. I'm sure it's very simple and I'm just overlooking the obvious.

Thanks, -mgm

Nice video and good choice of songs... now I'm feeling pressure to do a project with my 10th coming up. I'm on an old version of Vegas... was the title animation all done in Vegas?

One thought on the black bars: You could add two tracks across the top of the rest of the tracks, use media generator to create the black bars, and then use track motion on those 2 black tracks to set the size and position so they look like what you want at the top and bottom of the video... haven't tried it but seems like it would work...

Yes, I used ProType Titler in Vegas 8.0c.

True, I could add another video track and over lay it... don't know why I didn't think of that. I'm sure that and many others are ways it can be done...

Thanks for the hint bro... -mgm

Can I ask why you want to do this? Just curious.

Add another video track and add black generated media and crop it in reverse.

ah, I just think it adds another dimension to the video with a wider "looking" aspect ratio.

like in the one I did here: http://www.vimeo.com/2074575

or this one by Sami: http://www.vimeo.com/1632519

But thanks for the advice.

You can add a new track and use the Cookie Cutter to place black bars at the top / bottom of your picktures.

Edit: you have to create an empty event on the new track and match the length of this event to the length of your project. Then you can apply an Event FX or Track FX.

Cookie Cutter settings (example widescreen PAL): Shape = Square; Border = 0.3: Repeat X = 2; Repeat Y = 1; Size = 0.40:

While maybe not relevant to this project, I've got another way to insert bars (i.e. 16:9 for a 4:3 project).

--- Make one in a digital program like Photoshop or PhotoPaint and save it as a .png with alpha channel so middle is clear.

I have a couple of these bar babies in my general VP8 media folder. I just add a video track to the topmost part of the project, plop in the .png and match its length to the project or wherever needed in the timeline.

Hell, I even have a couple of odd ones too: one totally black .bmp, one totally white.
They do come in handy sometimes :O)
