Borders around captured video

I've never understood why I have borders (black with no video) around captured AVI video.

I'm taking video from VHS (NTSC) via a DV camera and using the A/D converter in the camera and Vegas, capturing it and then burning DVD's.

These small, narrow "borders" are simply a result of a smaller video size within a larger captured window. The left side is also smaller than the right and the bottom includes the typical head switching noise.

I've found that I can "push in" to eliminate these "borders".

Just wondering why I have them at all?

If you are making video to be shown on TVs, whatever is on the edges that you see on the computer preview will never show. That's well past the overscan area. An exception might be some video projectors that show the entire frame.

Mixer:

Without getting real technical ('cuz I only half-understand it myself) this is the part of the video you aren't supposed to see on a TV. If you're rendering to AVI, MPG, or QT for computer playback, add a Pan/Crop to the event and size it up a little, making sure you have turned Maintain Aspect Ratio off.

This eliminates the overscan in the rendered file.
