I got a call from Boris about two weeks ago---They wanted me to buy the current version to take advantage of a cheaper upgrade when the new version comes out. When I asked when, I was told that there was no definate date but that it should be by the end of July. For what it's worth.

Boris spends more time regression testing new versions than you average software co. It will be along directly.

I got a reply to this question from Boris support. They quoted end of July early August.

For those of us thinking in terms of Vegas pricing, it will not be cheap, though?
Approximate price?

Yeah, i know there is a lot of anticipation surrounding its release but like RexA said it is not going to be cheap. I think it will be priced right if you are in the industry and need a certain level of integration with your NLE. But for me, the lowest student pricing that i could find for Red 2.5 was $795!!

I didnt buy buy it for obvious reasons and instead use Swish and Cinepaint for titling and rotoscope/matte work. Its my understanding that Boris is still not very good for rotoscoping and many still prefer Commotion. I dont know. I had Red installed for 2 1/2 weeks and found many of the rotoscope/matte features could easily be replicated in Vegas or Cinepaint.

Titling was a different story. I think this is where Red excels. A lot of options that turn out very perfessional. It just seemed like a huge expense for titling.

Go with what works for you, but dont be surprised when they hand you the check.

For student pricing, try:

www.academicsuperstore.com or
www.borisfx.com

Both had Academic Red for $595

They must of dropped the price by $200 then. I have about a month old catalog from the academicsuperstore that lists it at $795. Maybe they are trying to make way for the new 3gl. In any event, i still think $600 is a lot if you dont do editing as a full time job. I hope that they improved the rotoscoping features in this version. I think that is what let me down in the last version.

Why would you buy v_2.5.2? It doesn't integrate with VEGAS so you would have to export your video from VEGAS. Import to RED apply effects. Export from RED and import back to VEGAS. (is this right?)

Or could I complete titles in RED 2.5.2 and export with a transparent background and just place it in VEGAS? (this won't work because the transparent background would turn black, eh?)

The idea is not to end up with only Red 2.5, but rather to buy the discontinued 2.5 as a stepping stone to get the free upgrade to version 3GL, which IS integratable with VEGAS 4.

Did anyone else notice? GL is getting to be "IN" with such as RED 3GL and Premie Pro being GL.

use Satish's frameserver and you eliminate at least one step of rendering .

Lamont,

Regarding titling in RED. If you create a title in RED export it as an avi (or Quicktime) with an alpha channel. Start Vegas and drop that clip on a track and then right click the event and select properties and then check the box for Alpha. This will remove the black background from the title.

According to the eMail I received this morning directly in response to my Monday question about Red 3GL's shipping, Boris answered that it would be sometime in August. That is today's answer. So much for second quarter.
