If you look carefully, you'll discover that the picture is cut off on all four sides. Televisions normally display the picture larger than the screen. This is done because the picture will shrink as the television ages, and the manufacturer wants to make sure the picture still fills the screen even when the television is old. The part of the picture that will be shown is called the "safe area". In order to make sure that something is seen on the screen, it must fall within this safe area. Download this picture: chienworks.com/media/safeareas.jpg and open it up on your timeline. You will see two rectangles. The inner one is the guarnteed safe area and anything within here will be visible on the TV. Anything outside the outer rectacgle probably won't be visible on any TV. You can use this image as a guide for positioning your text.

this might sound stupid. how do you resize the video so it fits in the safe area?

thanks

The easiest thing i've found is to go to Pan/Crop and drag the cropping rectangle out so that it's bigger than the frame. Unfortunately you'll have to do this for each clip; there's no Pan/Crop for the entire track. Also keep in mind that you will then end up with a black border around the image which might show up on some TVs, and will definately be visible if the video is played back on your computer screen. The best option is to take this into account when shooting the video (or taking pictures to use as stills) and make sure you leave ample space around the subject.

The solution with the "frame jpg" works with the text, but not with rest of the picture/video.

sorry, but I'm a new to video editing and I cannot figure out how I can use this technique to help solve my problem with the edges being cut off on the rest of the video.

does this mean that I have to capture my video in smaller frame size to make it fit in the inner rectangle? I'm basically saying, "I'm lost!!"

thanks Chienworks for the "frame jpg."

I wonder, did you accidently render a PAL Vcd when you meant to make a NTSC one? Watching a PAL image on an American screen could be described as having 'the bottom cut off'.

Its NTSC. I'm doing something wrong. Is there a book that you would suggest for beginners in video editing.
