...with Scenalyzer isn't comparable to what I see on the LCD screen of my Sony DCR-HC40 (set to full auto). I know I'm comparing apples and oranges here - i.e., little LCDs and big computer monitors - but when all is said and done, my clips are noticably darker. Is this normal?
It's likely a gamma issue between the two monitors. Have you calibrated your computer monitor for video? Even when you do, it's not perfect, but close enough for previewing. Whatever your camera shot, that's what's in your computer. Also, have you calibrated your camera monitor? Or adjusted the LCD on the camera?
I would say it's normal. I have noticed this many times, and the video on camcorder's LCD looks brighter because of LCD's small size. More than one pixel needs to be represented by one dot, and that adds up to look brighter.
There is also a difference in the way a computer monitor represents brightness and colors, and the way an ordinary video monitor or TV does. That's why video professionals use external video monitors for preview while editing, to make sure what they see is as close to the actual video as possible.
Vegas lets you use an external video monitor as well.
hasn't sony developed a camera with a ntsc monitor as the lcd monitor? i use the flatscreen lcd ntsc monitor for editing, but wouldn't it be cool to just include it on the camera in the firstplace?
