BSOD's: possible/probably cause found

AHCI: Intel® Rapid Storage Technology Driver for Intel Desktop Boards

I installed this software more than a year ago when I upgraded my Win7-64 system to an SSD drive. I had read that it helps improve performance for SSD's by ensuring the SSD has an AHCI driver. Since that time I updated the software a few times but never really paid much attention to it.

I recently started experiencing some BSOD's during AVCHD rendering and was able to get around them by using Safe Mode for rendering only. But last night I was editing a series of AVCHD clips totalling 48 min. down to about half that. That required a lot of cuts and scrubbing back & forth, and I started having BSOD's doing that.

Looking at the dump files led me (finally) to some postings about the Intel software. It seems like the version I had (not the current one, but one before that) had memory leaks and some other unspecified problems. One of the postings said the current version fixed the leaks and other problems related to BSOD's.

So I just uninstalled all the Intel stuff on my system and now my BSOD's seem to be gone. Using standard Windows mode I was able to finish the edits I was working on, and the render completed ok too.

I'm not clear what that Intel software really does - apparently it is mostly for supporting RAID, which i do not have. So far I've not noticed any difference in overall system performance with it gone.

I know that SSD drives require an AHCI driver, so even with that Intel software removed I verified that my system does indeed still have the Intel SATA AHCI Controller installed OK. So I think I am good to go.

some postings.... Intel software...

I'm glad your problem appears solved, in addition to mentioning the software, it might be nice to also provide links to those postings.

I know - sorry about that. It was pretty late and I was more interested in finding the fix. If you google the file name I posted you should be able to find the links. That's how I tracked them down.
