You're seeing pretty much what everyone else sees. For some formats the peak building process takes substantially longer than for others. I almost never see the CPU usage go over 3 or 4% for this. *shrug* No clue.

When i start a new project i'll often drag all the files to the timeline and then go have a snack or take a walk while the peaks build. After that they're all done so i don't have to wait for them individually as i add clips to the project.

I regularly import 2 hr mpg files (mpg1) and it only takes 5 or 10 min for the audio processing. I haven't timed it exactly .. I usually play one or two games of solitare while I wait .. but it's not as long as what you are experiencing.

Does it "seem like" 20-mins or does it actually take 20-mins? As everyone notes, it does take time but if it's really bad for you, you can try Options > Preferences > General tab, and enable the "Build peaks for visible events only."

This may allow you to get started quickly, but VMS will build peaks when you scrub through the timeline making other events visible, so your delays just get postponed, not eliminated.

Personally I have a four-year-old PC (2.8GHz/1GB RAM) and all I have to do for a 1-hr project is walk away for a couple of minutes for the peaks to build. Are all your media on fast/internal drives?
