building peaks in vms 8.0

it seems there's a difference between 6.0 and 8.0 as far as building peaks is concerned. i know for a fact that in 6.0, i only had to wait for the peaks to be built when i first loaded a video clip into the timeline of a new project. every time i loaded the project afterwards, i didn't have to wait - the peaks were there. now it seems in 8.0 that it always rebuilds the peaks with every subsequent loading of the project. why is this? it's too time consuming. is there a preference setting i'm missing? i couldn't find one.

Even in v6 I see peaks building when I just close & reopen the file. However, it doesn't seem to build peaks for *all* clips, only the ones it feels are necessary. After reopening once or twice, it stopped building peaks.

In v8 platinum, I opened I project I worked on this morning and it did not build any peaks.

There is a setting in preferences that you can change...it's described in the online help as well & discussed here.

i checked the preferences and there were 2 unchecked options for building peaks so i checked them both. didn't do any good. went over to my old PC and checked the prefs i had for the 6.0 version on that machine. they were also unchecked by default so those options made no difference. turns out, it was the fact that the videos i was using were all stored on my 500g external USB HD. when i started a new project using a video on my local C drive, the peaks only took a long time the first time i loaded then sped up when i loaded the project a second time which is what i saw on 6.0. can anybody think of a reason why the files on my external drive always take so long? could it be the USB connection is a bit slower??

Hi gmes,
It is my understanding that you always want to transfer data via firewire as opposed to USB. If your computer and hard drive have that capability, I would give that a try and see if you notice a difference. Let us know if that helps. Cin

if by firewire you mean a 1394 connector, i do have one on the front of my box but the HD uses USB only. are there such things as 1394 to USB adapters by chance and would that do any good?
thanx..

It's mostly important for capturing or printing to tape. As an external drive it doesn't make too much difference.

It also wouldn't have much of anything to do at all with peak building.
