Burn Vs Write Master

Can someone please explain to me the difference between burning a DVD and writing the master when it comes to render a SD DVD? It seems I can burn DVDs just fine and replicate them just fine. I don't understand when I might use or need the write master function.

Write Master is an option to create a Master DLT for replication in a commercial DVD facility.

And a function no longer practical in creating replication masters in current settings.
Just leave it alone.
