I've had exactly the opposite happen, media burnt at 1x didn't play but the same files and media burnt at 4x played fine.

Actually burn SPEED is irrelevant. What matters is applying the right amount of energy in the right spot on the media. At times the drive may be able to achieve this goal better at 4x than at 1x. Modern dye layers are much more sensitive, so the laser may not be able to throttle back far enough to not overcook the dye. At the same time the media may wobble too much at higher speeds for the laser to track properly.
Or in your instance it may have just been a one off slightly suspect disc.
The read process is never error free either, for both CD Audio or DVDs. Several layers of error coorection is employed during reading, better players may have better error correction as well as better mechanicals.

There is many variables at play in all of this and not all of them are under your control, best you can do is find what works the best and stick with it.
