Burning DVD's

I just purchased the LaCie d2 DVD R+/- RW+/- and attempted to burn my first DVD from Vegas 4.0. It was a ninety minute rock concert. Got as far as actually burning the DVD to a Memorex RW disc and it gave me an error. Could some of you please give me some basics on burning DVD's, i.e. how large of a file can you get on one disc and etc. By the way, I am using Vegas DVD Archetect. Thanks!

If you check under "optimise" in DVDA it'll tell you if it'll fit. The issue isn't how a large a file, for starters DVDs contain many files. The question is how much video but that depends on the bitrate used in the mpeg encode, the type of audio (PCM/ ac3) etc.

Seeing as how you've never done this before I'd highly recommend starting with something small and simple, say under 30 minutes. That'll fit no matter what. If you cannot get that to burn then start suspecting the burner.
Better yet just trying making a DVD backup of some large files. It'll be quite useless but a good way to check all is well with the burner. Well even then it doesn't prove it'll be OK for DVDs but if it fails that test then it'll as sure as hell not burn a DVD.

Mostly though if you get an error it'll be because of the burner. DVDA will not let you go into the burn phase if somethings wrong with the data.

You might also want to try another blank DVD other than Memorex. I think some people have had problems with Memorex DVDs, but it depends on the burner. I haven't burned a single coaster with my Pioneer burner with Verbatim DVD-Rs.

Thank you farss and DavidPJ! I tried to burn a smaller project and I was successful, so the recorder works. However, the DVD played back on my computer, but it would not play on my cheap Samsung DVD player. Any suggestions?
