Vegas will burn high def to a DVD. Far as I know, DVDA will not.

In Vegas, go to Tools > Burn Disc > Blu-Ray.

The resulting disc won't have menus, and player support for this kind of disc is spotty.

Yes, with all of the DVDA capabilities except scripting. Not all BD players will play these disks, however, especially early models. Most do.

Yeah, sorry....that didn't help me at all. Might as well have been in a different language. Thanks though.

Works perfectly for me with PS3.

@MozartMan (or others)

Using 5.0b, and attempted to put HD content on DVD media.
My PS3 sees the resulting disc as a 'data disc', and has trouble playing any content on the disk - identifying most of it as 'bad data'.
I have tried both the mpeg-2 and AVCHD formats (the options within DA).

PS3 is on firmware 2.7x

Any suggestions on what I might be doing wrong, or what your work-flow is, and I could try to duplicate?
-Thanks!

Guys,

If you want to put HD content on DVD media you need to use something else. I use Ulead DVD MovieFactory 6+ with HD pack and tsMuxeR. There is also a new tool called MultiAVCHD.

You can try these:

tsMuxeR: http://www.videohelp.com/tools/tsMuxeR

MultiAVCHD: http://www.videohelp.com/tools/multiAVCHD

I have Ulead 6, I'll give that a try.

However, I'd like to use DA, and 5.0b 'looks' like SCS 'thinks' they support this.
From DA main screen
'Make Blu-Ray Disc'
--Prepare
---Optimize
----Project Properties
------Disc Format 'Blu-ray Disc'
------Target media size (GB) - allows choices of 4.7; 8.5; 25; and 50
--Burn the media using DA
One could draw conclusions this would make a 'compliant' Blu-ray disc on either a single or dual layer DVD media - as well as single or dual layer Blu-ray.

Anyone have any experience with DA 5.0b on DVD media - playing in a PS3?
How about using the above work flow in another Blu-ray device? Success?
What, if anything should change in that work flow?

Thanks.

I have an answer.
From the DVD Architect Manual pg 25
It states this is supported (high def on DVD media) - but that the PS3 treats DVD media with Blu-ray content as a data disc.

Apparently - that is only true if burned with DA - as Ulead discs play in the PS3 (I have not tested that personally yet).

That seems to be true. I don't have Ulead either, but the "HDMV to AVCHD" guide MozartMan posted above works ok, enabling high-def projects on my DVD-R media to play with menus on my PS3.

The freeware multiAVCHD program is currently under active development (several releases a day!) and it looks promising. It can make a AVCHD disc with menus using 1080i 25 Mbps MPEG2 without re-encoding, which as far as I know DVDA cannot. So far I haven't got it completely working with HDV input due to an audio issue, but it may be just a matter of renaming my .m2t files to .m2ts or something of that sort.

Edit: the current version of multiAVCHD will generate a AVCHD project that you can burn to DVD-R disc and it will play OK in a PS3. It uses your HDV .m2t files without re-encoding the video! Due to a program glitch, you do need to rename the files to .ts instead of .m2t before using them, but having done that, it is quite fast to author a project. (you are limited to a few different types of pre-set menus, but they are serviceable). The disc will probably not play in every Blu-Ray player, but for now the PS3 is all I care about. It is pretty straightforward to re-author the project into a true Blu-Ray format on BD-R, should I ever get a BD-R burner.

After a little experimentation - I have also verified both Ulead and Nero 9 create 'AVCHD DVD' discs which play very well in the PS3. Windows Vista calls the DVD disc a 'Blu-Ray' disc when inserted. (I do not have a BR drive) Discouraging that DVDA does not support creation of AVCHD DVD discs compatible with the PS3, and other packages do - those packages are far inferior to Vegas for editing, and DVDA for authoring flexibility.
jbeale's findings above are very interesting, and I'll see if I can make that work - AVCHD output in Vegas has been nothing but trouble for me so far.

John, I tried that for you: I downloaded IMGBurn and used it to create a disc from the 'blu-ray' .iso created by DVD architect. Windows vista did not see the resulting disc as a 'blu-ray' disc (as it does with the discs created by Nero/Ulead), so I did not have high hopes for the PS3. And my low expectations were met - the PS3 see's the disc as a 'data disc'.
Looking at the folder structure of the two discs there are obvious differences. The Nereo disc closely fits the same folder structure as created on the SDHC cards within my AVCHD camera at the \\PRIVATE\AVCHD\BDMV\ location (on the SD).
DVDA creates discs with differences at the root level (adding a 'CERTIFICATE\BACKUP' folder, and 4 additional folders within the \\BDMV\ folder structure.
A few years ago I moved from Pinnacle Studio to Vegas DVDA because Pinnacle couldn't manage to do similar things - (DVD's would work in some players, but not others - Nero discs would work in them all). SCS has always been vastly more responsive - than Pinnacle. Hopefully this is a temporary issue - otherwise I'll be looking for another alternative again - one where I can author a disc in a 'real' environment (like DVDA), not a work-around.

From the DVDA manual;
page 25 - "You can also burn high-definition video to a DVD for playback in a Blu-ray Disc player using the BDMV-format"

page 25 - Notes: Not all Blu-ray players can read DVD media. The Playstation 3 treats DVD media with Blu-ray content as a data disc. In order to play your media, you'll need to navigate to the BDMV folder on the disc and select the stream you want to play; interactivity - including menus, chapter markers, subtitle tracks, and alternate audio tracks - is not available."

page 32 - "If you want to burn a Blu-ray Disc project to DVD media, choose 8.50 or 4.70"

page 33 - "28 Mbps is the maximum bit rate for Blu-ray Disc project burned to DVD media"

I dont have a PS3 so can someone else try this? To navigate to the BDMV folder on the PS3 disc and select the stream.

John,

Would you please elaborate why you do not use Architect to burn DVD's? Also, any mailware or other problems you've ever seen with ImgBurn?

I was trying to burn some vegas output 1280x720 avi content to DVD however, it does not show as an option, only under Blu-ray. The thing of of it is that the original media was captured 16x9 widescreen/24p but not HD...still I should be able to create a non-Blu-ray disc larger then 720x I would have thought....

Tks.
