DVDA is well known for not recognizing external burners.

Make sure you are running the latest build of DVDA. If you have a USB connection, try using firewire or vice-versa. Try putting some media in the burner before launching DVDA.

If none of those work, you should formally report the problem to Sony, though I wouldn't expect a response and/or fix. Your best bet will likely be to purchase a copy of Nero and use it to do your burning after DVDA has prepared the project.

If you have the latest version, use the Nero SmartStart interface. Select DVD.
move the mouse over the Photo/Video icon, you'll get a bunch of selections - at the bottom is a slider bar, slide that to the right and you'll see the "Burn DVD-Video files" - click it. This will launch the burning app; drag your video_ts folder onto the video_ts folder that nero shows in the project display, click "burn"

would it be the actual DVD architect file?

Not the DAR file. You need to do the prepare step in DVDA, specify the folder where you want things to be put. DVDA will create two sub-folders, a VIDEO_TS and an AUDIO_TS - just drag the VIDEO_TS folder into Nero.
