Buying multiple copies of Movie Studio Platinum to get more Boris FX?

The Vegas Pro comparison chart shows the extras that come standard with each Vegas Pro version. The chart details exactly which Boris FX Units are included standard with the Suite version:

https://www.vegascreativesoftware.com/us/vegas-pro/product-comparison/#productMenu

Bonus offers over-and-above the standard inclusions change from time to time, and this has been the case for years. More and more, the bonus plugins are likely to be license-locked to the version of Vegas they ship with. I've long considered the 'free' bonus plugins to be teasers as an inducement to get users to buy the full package or more products from the 3rd party plugin company.

Hopefully, someone will have hands-on experience about the inter-changeability of BorisFX bonus plugins between various Vegas products.

Thanks! There's a lot of activity on the Boris forum with very detailed posts about the various units. I'll check there. The link you provided clearly answers the question I asked in the other post: Boris' "Film Style" unit is in fact a different product from the Boris "Stylize" unit. While both have the Integrated Beat Reactor, the former has film stocks (which I can do without), while the latter has the "video damage" filters (which I want).

The link shows how Boris splits its product line into two categories:

1. Continuum Premium Filters.
2. Continuum Units.

I don't want to pop for the full $1,995 Continuum license since I'm only linterested in a few of the effects:

Continuum Premium Filters:
A. Particle Illusion.
B. Title Studio.

Continuum Units:
A. Particles.
B. Stylize.
C. Transitions.

The only two units I really want are the particles unit and the stylize unit (not "film style"). Although it would be nice to have the transitions unit as well, that's not currently offered in a bundle.

In the Magix comparisons chart, "Boris FX Continuum Particles Unit (v2020.5)" is included in Pro Suite, and since it's called a "unit," this must be the latter product (not the "Particle Illusion" filter). Good. So that's settled—I believe that's the one I want (the one with the cube-like UI).

Now I just need to somehow get the "Stylize" unit. If I can't find the answer at the Boris forum, I may just buy the $49 Magix product currently bundled with "Stylize." If the license only works with that SKU, I'll just open that product when I need that effect.

@studio-4  ... Please be aware that the BorisFX Units included with Vegas Pro Suite are from the Boris Continuum product line from the 2020.5 version. This is not the latest version. The latest version is Continuum 2021 - and the latest version contains significantly more VFX than the 2020.5 version (more than 80 new VFX across all the Units), and this will be the information that you are seeing on BorisFX's website. For instance, the 2021 Film Style Unit has 14 VFX whereas the 2020.5 version has just 8 VFX.

Also note that the premium filters are filters (VFX) included in a range of BCC Units but are sold separately. For instance, Title Studio can be bought as a premium filter but does not need to be if you've bought the 3D Objects Unit because Title Studio is included as standard in that Unit. Beauty Studio is in the Image Restoration Unit. as is the Optical Stabilzer filter.

By the way, Boris Continuum Complete (all the Units and Premium Filters) should not cost $1,995 (if you are referring to USD). For Vegas, the OFX version is the one to opt for, and for a new perpetual licence of BCC, the OFX version costs $695 USD plus any applicable taxes.

If you are interested in getting just a few Units directly from BorisFX, perhaps contact their sales team to see if any bulk discount can apply, but keep in mind that just on the cost of the Units, buying just two Units at the advertised price is not far short of buying the entire BCC package.

Another consideration, Vegas Movie Studio does not appear on BorisFX's host compatibility chart, only Vegas Pro appears. Although it probably isn't a problem given that Units are offered with Movie Studio, it would be a good idea just to check with BorisFX before purchasing to confirm Vegas Movie Studio compatibility.

Wow, Dexcon! Cool! That answers like a billion questions I had. How confusing are these product lines?

1. The 2020.5 version thing—big one. Thanks!
2. I checked for discounts: They had two: One at NAB 2019 for 25%-off and another one on Black Friday 2020.
3. I had no f'ing idea what the hell "OFX" meant, but thank God, that's the one I need! So, $695, not $1,995!

So, wait for Black Friday or blow seven-hundred bucks for the three things I want from three different units—that is, I only really like one or two of the effects from each unit:

A. Particles Unit.
B. Stylize—I really only want just one of the glitch-effects, and also the audio-reactivity.
C. Misalignment (RGB color-offset); part of Stylize: Though wildly overused, I really love that effect.
D. Transitions: Really like one of the transitions.

Good to know that about the 3D Titler deal (again, I would've never known that had you not told me). Actually not interested much in the titler anymore. So to get everything I want, I have to buy three Continuum units, which of course cost as much as the entire pack. So, wait until Black Friday, or blow it all?

Option A:

1. Go for the Magix $99 upgrade offer to Vegas Pro, and
2. Buy Continuum for $695. Total damage: $794 (ouch!).

Or, do one of the following:

Option(s) B:

1. Buy another version of Movie Studio Suite 17 for $79 (I just bought this last week) which gives me Stylize 2020.5.
2. Buy the $49 version of Movie 17 Platinum, and get the currently bundled Stylize Unit, which may or may not work with the Movie Studio Suite SKU.
3. Pay the $299 upgrade to Pro Suite 18 to get Titler.

After reviewing the video demos, I really only want the Stylize Unit (though, Transitions would be nice, but again, I only like a few of them).

Actually, I can just buy the Movie Studio 17 Platinum for $49. I won't "lose" anything, since I don't use any of the suite add-ons anyway that I already have. Then, I can upgrade to Pro 18, and thinking about it, I don't think Magix would disable any of your cumulative plug-ins, since that would upset anyone upgrading and significantly deincentivize anyone from doing so.

The only problem is, I can't tell what's missing from Stylize 2020.5, versus the 2021 version (is there a 2020.5 feature-table somewhere?). If 2020.5 has the two or three effects I like, I'm good. And, I'll be done for just another $49.

robertOZ: Thanks! I see now that many (all) of the standalone products are free downloads.

I was reading back in the forum and found this thread I began. To answer the question: I first bought VMS 17 Platinum Suite, bundled with the FXhome Intensity VFX pack. A week later, I bought VMS 17 Platinum alone, bundled with BorisFX' Stylize Unit 2020.5 and NewBlue Elements 3 Overlay. Add On's are not related to a Suite Version or Platinum Version, in both Versions it is just VMS17. Normally also these Add On's will show up in VegasPro. When being OFX effects they can even show up in other editors.

Thank you for the information to download the Boris partial Illusion effect. Downloaded and placed in my Vegas downloads folder for a future date when I have enough expertise to install and try it out. Looks fantastic.

I purchased Movie Studio 17 Platinum and came with Continuum Title Studio. Could you explain how to add Continuum title Studio in Movie Studio 17?

GABRIEL-CATALANALADREN wrote on 6/28/2021, 11:52 PM

@GABRIEL-CATALANALADREN:

I don't own Title Studio so I can only guess: Install the bundled Boris plug-in via the provided link in your original Magix registration email. I'm guessing it would appear as a third-party media generator in Vegas, but I'm not sure. I don't think Title Studio is standalone, but when you click it in Vegas, it should open its own window with its own UI.

Boris is installed, of course. Boris plug-ins (not Title Studio) appear in Vegas Movie Studio. Boris Title Studio is an stand-alone application. What I don't know is how to link Boris Title Studio to Vegas Movie Studio.

misohoza wrote on 6/29/2021, 6:37 AM

Do you have license for Title Studio?

When you install any Boris FX continuum unit I think the Particles and Title Studio standalone applications are installed. But there is no way how to use the standalone application of Title Studio in Vegas. It's only useful to create a project which you can later load from inside the plugin.

To use Title Studio in Vegas you need to apply it as effect. It doesn't appear as media generator. So this is slightly different approach than using text media in Vegas.

But you need the license for it, of course.

To get BorisFX Title Studio as an OFX plugin for use in many NLEs including Vegas Pro and Vegas Movie Studio, you need to have a licence for Boris Continuum's 3D Objects Unit:

Do you have license for Title Studio?

When you install any Boris FX continuum unit I think the Particles and Title Studio standalone applications are installed. But there is no way how to use the standalone application of Title Studio in Vegas. It's only useful to create a project which you can later load from inside the plugin.

To use Title Studio in Vegas you need to apply it as effect. It doesn't appear as media generator. So this is slightly different approach than using text media in Vegas.

But you need the license for it, of course.

I have Boris Title studio license, received when purchased Movie Studio 17.

How to apply the effect in Movie Studio?

@GABRIEL-CATALANALADREN  ... According to https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/vegas-movie-studio-17-price-watch--120230/?page=2 , only the BorisFX Continuum Stylize Unit came with Movie Studio with the recent bonus offers, not the entire Boris Continuum Complete (BCC) Suite. Please refer to my 2nd Comment in this thread for further details.

The Stylize suite webpage is https://borisfx.com/products/continuum-units/stylize/?collection=continuum-units&product=continuum-units-stylize which shows the current version just released by BorisFX. The version that came with Movie Studio may be an earlier version of Stylize.

BorisFX has a YouTube tutorial about how to install just the licensed Unit that comes with either Vegas Pro or Movie Studio - the process is the same for both. And the process is the same regardless of which Unit or Units are involved. The relevant installation process demonstration begins at 02:45:

Anything over and above the licenced Stylize Unit would need to be purchased from BorisFX.

Edit: Just to clarify because you wrote that you've got a Title Studio licence - with the purchase confirmation email that you received from MAGIX, there was a serial number given for the BorisFX Stylize Unit and there was also another separate serial number given for BorisFX Title Studio. If that is the case, and without showing your serial number, what precise wording is given on that email in relation to Title Studio?

Thank you @GABRIEL-CATALANALADREN for the details in your email.

As BorisFX Title Studio is in the BCC 3D Objects Unit and not in the Stylize Unit, you unfortunately do not have a licence for Title Studio. To get Title Studio, you would need to purchase either the 3D Objects Unit or Title Studio as a Premium Filter. The following link is to BorisFX's Continuum Units and Premium Filters webpage which provides lots of information about each of the 20 Units as well as the 9 Premium Filters. Please note that each Premium Filter is an individual plug in sourced from one of the Units so, rather than buying the whole Unit, you can spend a bit less if you just want one of the offered Premium Filters.

BorisFX: Part I

I just got my new Asus laptop and found that BorisFX Stylize Unit (the version bundled with certain Magix products) grants only a single license; i.e., you can only install it on one computer at a time. I'll have to buy another license to put that on my laptop. However, NewBlue's Elements 3 Overlay (also bundled with certain Magix products) allows installation on at least two computers. I have NewBlue on both my HP Z440 server and my Asus laptop, both using the same VMS 17 Platinum license.

asus laptop system specifications:
Asus 17.3" Republic of Gamers Strix G17 model: 77H0ROG1.
Ryzen 9 5900HX 3.3GHz (4.6GHz boost), eight-core CPU.
Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 (6GB GDDR6).
32GB Crucial 3200MHz DDR4 (x2 16GB 120-pin SO-DIMMs).
512GB M.2 NMVe PCIe SSD (available second M.2 slot).

BorisFX Part II:

I again tried to install BorisFX' Stylize plug-in onto my new laptop, and realized it's BorisFX, not FXhome, as I stated earlier (but haven't tried that yet), which grants only a single license.

BorisFX Continuum 2021.5:

So I bought a one-month, non-recurring subscription to the complete set of BorisFX Continuum 2021.5 units just to have them all now, and since it's only $25, it didn't make a huge dent in my wallet. Plus, I'm waiting for Black Friday to buy full versions of FXhome products and BorisFX. While it's great to have the entire Continuum collection, unfortunately, like Magix' subscription-based licenses, the BorisFX' subscription-license is only good for a single computer.
