Bye for now...

Hi Friends,

Although this one is not technically a regular forum post, just wanted to write this for the benefit of whoever has experienced various frustrations with Vegas, editing either once in a while or on day by day basis. Don't think it is a Vegas bashing, as it is not! All I say here it's valid FOR ME and might very well be very different to someone else.

I used Vegas 16 for a short while and was happy with it. Very stable and easy to work with and to make it do what it needed to. I was so convinced by it, that I bought Movie Studio licence, two of them actually, v15 and v16.

When Vegas 17 was released, having a number of new features announced, I was all in.

Problem was that it became much more moodier than v16 and some of the new features, especially the new Video Stabilizer - which I need to use a lot - were not performing very well. I though future updates will fix this, but did not really happen.

I had high hopes for Vegas 18, as this, in my view, would have been the chance for Vegas to catch-up with the latest developments of other NLEs, and while v17 might be what it is, v18 should have been something massively improved. Well, maybe Vegas will do the "great change" for version 20. Who knows?

Point is, after all this time, I will have to stop using Vegas, as it is unfortunately not a good match for me.

I noticed so many issues with it, but equally there are many many users who do not experience those, so my conclusion is that Vegas is rather in-predictable and you really need to test before buy, to see if it will work with your specific system or not.

It seems that in my case, with MY SYSTEM - which is in the signature - Vegas does not perform well.

With Vegas 18, I DID GET better rendering experience, I only had one crash that I couldn't figure out the cause of and overall it seems smoother and nicer. BUT, v18 is still not working, FOR ME, well enough, stabilization is unusable, there are always sooo many little check-boxes to verify, workarounds and tweaks to do. I wish it just worked. It is not the case though and so, I'd be not using it for a while.

Just wanted to say thank you to those on this forum who are really about helping and explaining stuff. This arena is a very useful place and of great value, so for me was a great gain to be around here! I will probably continue to check it out once in a while too.

For those that are lucky, Vegas is GREAT! I totally enjoyed the workflow and was quite a struggle to adjust to anything else, because Vegas' workflow is so logically designed and I would have LOVED to keep working with it. Maybe in the future. So, if Vegas works for you, enjoy it and be productive, as really it is the fastest editor. When it works.

Thank you all again and for Vegas team, I would say keep up the good work, as you do deserve to have a good, appreciated product. Vegas DOES improve and I am sure it will continue to do so, so hopefully sooner than later what is to be resolved will be.

Peace out!

Adi

Im not so lucky and will see you on the other side after I finish 3 more projects using a previous version of V. I think I've run every video editing software in the world on my system, and am a computer tech support by trade, and never had one crash in any of them. Just Vegas. Every time I try to work in 17 now, it is jumping though hoops of resets, tweaks, restarts, just to open files. Don't know what the issue is, and it is not worth wasting my time with Tech Support. Looking at the forum, others have many issues too. Shame.

@adimatis and @wwjd Sorry to see you go, but I am sure you have your reasons!

I am not upgrading to Vegas Pro 18, but I am also not losing hope, yet. I will wait for version 19 and will see what will happen from there! If Vegas Pro 19 does not make drastic improvements to stability, then I might as well say goodbye to Vegas Pro .. however my goodbye most often will not be a temporary move .. it will be for good because I will dedicate all my time to learn DaVinci Resolve and learn everything about it to master it.

@adimatis That's too bad to hear but understandable. I think there is hope as the 18 upgrade was focused on fixing GPU support. Hopefully dynamic ram preview and getting rid of various legacy workarounds is next on the list.

I have other editors. Each has it's own issues. I use the right tool for the right job that I am doing. I have a consumer editor that will do multicam (6 cameras and 2 audio sources) with no problem with a few of clicks. It also has templates to aid in particular projects I do.

For the more complex, I use VP17. My only issue is with so4Compound. It has to be off, otherwise VP crashes every minute. This makes using 10bit not an option. But I've gotten by with 8bit and none of my work requires 10bit. But, I want it, if you know what I mean. While I am willing to live with that shortcoming, I can see where others just can not.

I haven't gotten VP18 yet, but do like it's added feature set. But I never get a "new" release. I wait for a patch or two, then buy. Video editors are a "vice" for me, since I do not drink, smoke, etc., and the cost is low averaged out over a year. But, if something isn't working for you, I understand.

Much success in your editing going forward.

I use Panasonic cameras. G9, G7, FZ300. I also use still images from them, in addition to game play footage (mp4).

VP17 worked until I installed I installed the last update. Let's just say, with the constant crashing, I was not happy and posted about it in the forum. @wwjd made the suggestion about disabling it, I did, and the crashing stopped.

GH5 operator here. The So4 compound has been on for me on VP 18 and no crashes in the past 8 days that I've been using it.

I would recommend at least giving the trial a try. You don't buy a dime for it and you don't have to remove 17 to try it out.

Spend roughly 20 minutes putting together footage without putting together footage (also, be sure resampling disabled since you're not using Interlaced footage)

See how it works out.

Thanks @Mohammed_Anis I will try the VP18 trial.

I've been using Vegas for paid work since 3.0 & have a lot of mixed feelings... On one hand, I hate to slap the hand that feeds me... I have used Vegas for paid work since 3.0 & was even editing full-time for a number of years with a decent net income... However, on some days Vegas is the bane of my existence... I really, really want each new version to succeed because when Vegas succeeds, I succeed... Right now it's like rooting for the home team, which is the Cleveland Browns for me... Even when the Browns fail, often year after year..., they still have some of the most loyal fans... So ya, I'll probably be the last guy on this forum saying, "Go Team Vegas, this year is YOUR year!"
