Camcorder as A to V converter

Recently I acquired a Sony TRV-38 which has the capability of doing Analog to Digital (and vice versa) conversion in the camera. I can use to camera to turn old VHS and 8mm to DV, and also can use the camera to convert the signal from the computer to analog when I want to do Preview from Vegas.

I have a few questions about this. How good is the A/D converter in the camera? How does it compare to using something like a Canopus AVDC-100? How does it stack up, codec-wise, to what else is out there?

My experience thus far has been favorable; I'd just like to get some more opinions and experienced comments. Thanks!

gdsmith,

When I started doing conversions of my old video tapes, I bought a TRV-120 specifically for the analog passthrough feature. My results have been great.

My brother has a similar camera which doesn't support passthrough so he bought the Canopus ADVC-100. The conversions look very similar. So for my money, I would rather have a camcorder that converts, than a converter that can only convert.

I have two TRV 120's one I use for A to DV all the time. Get a great converter and a backup camera if you ever need it. To me it is a no brainer.
