camera mic inputs

i have a sony TRV-410. it is a digital 8 camcorder. is the "mic" input a stereo input? the reason i am asking is cuz it seems like all the mics you can buy are stereo mics.... if so, could i basically make up my own cable to go from 1/8" stereo to 2 separate xlr cables for 2 different dynamic mics? i like the idea of having the mics off the camera. it cuts out all the mechanical noise. plus, this would make a cool remote audio recording devise. any ideas on wiring and what not?

Most mics are mono!
But you can get quite good mono mics that will fit the camera very nicely, Rode make one for a reasonable price, you can even get a 'dead cat' for it to cut down wind noise.
And it'll plug straight into the camera.

i realize most mics are mono. i am talking about ones specifically designed for camcorders.

i guess my question is, is the mic input on my camera a stereo input?

To my knowledge, all miniplug mic inputs on Sony camcorders are stereo.

I use two stereo mics a lot with my camcorders, an inexpensive Sony ECM-MS908C and an Audio Technica AT-822. Both work great with the cameras.

I use a 3.5mm stereo plug to 2 X 3.5mm mono sockets to enable me to use an on board MKE300 mike and a radio mic.
