With all the other video capture software i've used, there's a menu or
dialog box i can get into that lets me specify the capture resolution i
want to use (640x480, 320x240, 160x120, etc.) and that's really
nice just for archiving old home videos that don't need the full
resolution. It's also nice for the cruddy stuff because 4GB holds a LOT
more 320x240 video than 640x480.
However, here's the question ... why can't i find a place in SF's video
capture to set that resolution? It would be REALLY nice :-)
This is a function of the capture card and has nothing to do with Vegas/Vidcap. We call the capture device property page if available and in many cases you can make adjustments there.
Yes, i understand that ... especially since that properties page looks
identical in every capture program i've used. However, the point is that
i can get to that properties page in every capture program except SF
Video Capture. It doesn't show up there.
Pinnacle Studio DV allows one to capture footage at markedly reduced data rates, and work and edit this footage on Studio's timeline, (I doubt you could import this footage into VV though). When doing the final render, you hook up your camcorder with the relevant tapes and the program automatically shuttles around capturing the full resolution footage for the final product. Some people have reported great success with this feature on Pinnacle's forum, other's have not been so lucky. Good Luck.
I wouldn't dare think of sacrificing video quality get more drives or bigger ones or both. My myself, I'm selling a 1394 Firewire 30GB Western Digital Hard Drive. And a 60GB ATA100 7200RPM Maxtor Hard Drive. If you feel an interest contact me @ movmaker2k@hotmail.com
With the price of hard drives dropping while capacity keeps rising there is no reason to have less than a 30 or 40 gig drive. You can get 100 gigs for aroung $300.00
You can digitize a lot of video on 40 gigs of drive space.
