Can I automate the Rate slider?

I've got Vegas 3.0. While playing my project, I can manually click and drag the Rate slider and make the entire project go faster, slower,and reverse, and even the audio slows down with the video. Is there a way to automate this with an envelope or is this function mearly for fun?

The rate slider is only used while "scrubbing" across the timeline. It is a tool for finding an exact edit point quickly. It has no effect on the project at all.

So you can't actually use it as a tool? It would be nice if you could revers video, or speed it up, and have the audio stay in synch with the video instead of having to do some external editing to the audio. Are you absolutely sure?
