Can I Get Rid of Jagged Text?

Hellot wrote on 1/10/2010, 12:33 PM
Hi,
I put some title sequences on a project of mine, but even when I render with the best settings, the words always have, jagged, pixelated edges. Is there any way to get rid of or diminish this? It happens no matter what font I use.

Also, for DVD, MPEG-2 is the best format to render in correct, as far as keeping quality?

increase the resolution of the event. You can do that in the window you type the text up. Up top of that window allows you to edit the resolution.

First of all, MPEG2 is the only format to which you can render for DVD.

It may also be jagged due to the 4:2:0 color sampling of DVD-compliant MPEG2. Does the text use a highly saturated font color on a single color background?

@ TheHappyFriar: Thanks, I'll try that.

@ John Cline: It's a bright magenta text with a heavy turquoise outline effect on black. Yeah, I tried rendering it to WMV and I don't have the aliased text. Windows media player is the only program I have to watch the finished product, so could that be the problem with the MPEG-2 rendering? I haven't put it on DVD yet, but might it go away if I put it on DVD?

No, it will not go away. There are hard and fast technical limitations to certain video formats when it come to color sampling and the choice of colors. Bright magenta with a turqouise outline on a black background is pretty much a worst case scenario for both the 4:2:0 color sampling of MPEG2 for DVD and HDV, and the 4:1:1 color sampling of standard definition DV. You can try desaturating the colors or adding some texture or noise but basically, what you're trying to do can't be done cleanly.

You might try the Edge Smoother effect in Newbluefx Video Essentials III.

Vegas is professional software, so how do the professionals do it. Are they just forced to use a simpler text or do they do titles and stuff in different software?

Newbluefx Video Essentials III... How many essentials before they actually get all the essentials in a package.

That is too many essentials in my professional opinion. I like New Blue but this is becoming a BIG GIMMICK and a rip off!

"Are they just forced to use a simpler text"

No, they understand the limitations of the medium and work within the limits. They know that bright magenta text with a heavy turquoise outline effect on a black background simply won't work. You can try adding some texture to the background or the outline, even a slight bit of noise will probably help.

The following article is, IMO, a must read.
Great Titles with the DV Codec

Did you increase the resolution of the Text Event, as suggested? You should set the horizontal and vertical resolution to exactly twice the project resolution.

The other thing to do is render using the "Best" option. You will find this under the Custom button in the File -> Render As dialog.

Yes I did. Unfortunately I can't completely eliminate the jagged edges to my satisfaction but It helps good enough for what I'm doing. Thanks for the tip.

Has anyone tried the text smoothing plugin in New Blue Video essentials III yet? I have the first two sets and absolutely love them both.
