Can I get your opinion on these stabilized clips!?

daniel-t2081 wrote on 10/5/2019, 4:47 PM

Hey guys. This clip was recorded with Camera glasses. I used the BASIC stabilization mode to edit. This is for a documentary, which will be shown on movie theater screens. Which clip do you think will work the best???

(First clip is original, second is 0.5 smoothness, third is 1.0 smoothness, fourth is 1.5 smoothness)

Seems I personally prefer 3rd one...

Looks like you have interesting project, as this is quite similar to previous question you did here.

My opinion: As you limit the project to camera glasses recording only... I think you also need to practice of less-shake head movements, or try to position yourself (in case of having 2 or more people in your scene) without the need to do a lot of panning. Of course you need to 'balance' between your role as a cameraperson and while being yourself as a person.

So you can't just rely on software's stabilizer but your camera works too. And don't forget to add a 'still' 'shot' before and after these clips so people not being brought to dizziness on full-length complete feature.

For the amount of cropping vp17 stabilise does at most extreme stabilise it does a poor job. it also introduces optical distortion in form of Vertigo effect aka dolly zoom. I tried it with resolve at 30% crop and it eliminates most of the obnoxious jerking . Resolve is free, you could use it just for stabilise. There's plugins for vegas that would be superior but not free

Stabilize your head.

You're recording with camera glasses, so probably the persons you're recording are not aware that they are being recorded and you also probably didn't got their permission to publish these recordings here...could cause big trouble...

@daniel-t2081 - Hi! You’ve got the “Enthusiasm-over-Outcome” Curse. Nothing at all Wong with that, but there’s just soooo much one can do, and you’ve hit the buffers on this. I’ve got a trick to trim while on TL to assess Start and Finish of Wobblers.

@set - YES!

Thank you for your reply. So, you said that there are plugins for Vegas that are superior, but not free. What are those plugins? I would be willing to pay for any program if it will help with the stabilization. Thanks for your help!

What's the reason to film especially with camera glasses? Would a GoPro Hero or a DJI Osmo Pocket not be more suitable, they already have superb stabilizers, which makes in post stabilizing unnecessary.

Prodad's Mercalli 4 is almost as expensive as an above mentioned cam with stabilizer. Mercalli 4 gives better results as Vegas stabilizer but don't expect miracles.

A very good point. And GoPro have just released the GoPro Hero 8 Black via pre-order which apparently has even better stab - I hope so since I've already ordered it, though even the 7 would be better than the 5 I currently have.

I'm using the hero7 since almost a year, which has already a superb stabilizing which makes in post stabilizing unnecessary. I'm also using the the Osmo Pocket, which has besides the solid rock stabilisation, the possibiliy to follow moving subjects, which is very usefull when interviewing persons on street, like in your examples.
