Can I trim without having to re-render?

I'm a new user of Vegas 4. I have mpeg-2 files that I want to edit the first and last few minutes out of, just save the middle. Also would like to edit commercials out of captured TV episodes for personal archive. If the captured mpeg-2 file is fine other than that, is there a way to trim out the unwanted parts and save the resulting file without having to re-render the whole thing? I was told that Vegas was capable of this, but haven't been able to find out how.

Thanks!

I know that Vegas does this for DV avi files just fine-but DV avi files don't really have any parameters.

When you put mpeg2 files on the timeline cut out a section, and then save that section, Vegas has to make a new MPEG2 file (just as it makes a new avi file) but since there are lots of MPEG2 parameters I suspect that Vegas will want to re-render. The only way around it might be if you were editing the file in a project whose settings matched the MPEG2 media and then if you were saving a new MPEG2 file with the exact same settings as the original media.

So, to sum it up, I don't know. But the above ideas might guide you as you try it out.

Vegas will always re-render MPEG.
