Can my PC w/ Vegas Pro 8 handle HF100 AVCHD?

I've been looking hard trying to find a camcorder to suit my needs. The Cannon HF100 is probably overkill but I'm having trouble in my search for something else. Given its more than I need (ideally I'm looking to shoot 720p) I don't want to get it if it is going to make editing a pain and I hear AVCHD takes a very powerful system.

Here are my specs (I'd consider minor upgrades if it would get me there):
Vista Business 64bit
Intel Q6600 Quad at 2.4GHz
4GB DDR2 800 memory
ATI HD4850 video card

I'm combining footage with 720p video recorded from game consoles. I typically can edit 720p fine as long as its not a crappy format, but never have worked with anything higher. I'll be making online videos but preferably I'd want to keep higher res archives in case I ever use the vids across any other medium (most likely DVDs).

I was hoping to find a solid 720p camcorder with external mic input but that doesn't seem to exist in at least the consumer market ( was hoping to spend under $400 but could stretch up to like $700). I'm just using it, on a tripod, to essentially capture one or more people playing video games.

Of course I'd enjoy more features, etc for other uses I might find but its not really necessary. If the HF100 might give me any trouble I'm probably just gonna pick up a cheap Samsung MX20 even though its not HD and try to sync up the video with an external mic.

Thanks.

HF100 is an awesome cam and my dual 2.66 MacPro handles it very nicely in Vegas 8.0c - definitely upgrade to C as B had some funky issues with Canon AVCHD.

It's not as zippy as HDV of course but very manageable. I actually transcode to ProRes on the Mac and bring that in to edit in Vegas - only because I'm in and out of Final Cut Pro and Vegas on any given day.

good luck!

I have the Canon HF10 which is the the same as HF100 and as you know captures AVCHD which is very resource intensive. Your Q6600 quad will easily handle it.

Considering using a Canon HF100 or Canon HF10,(Pal).What would a reasonable expectation be if, using a AMD 5200+ with 2 gig Ram, to edit AVCHD?

Manageable, despite slower preview capability compared to a Quad System?
Thank you.

Probably hard to say exactly. Try and get some sample footage and play with it.

You can convert to HDV using the AVCUpshift from www.vasst.com too.

Be careful about UpShift... I just bought it and it does NOT work well at this point. Check out http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/forums/ShowMessage.asp?MessageID=618027&Replies=49 this[/link] link.

I just installed Vista Home Premium 64-bit and Vegas 8.1 on my machine. With 8GB of RAM, it really screams and my render times are about 50-60% of those with version 8c on XP 32-bit, with 3.25GB of usable RAM. I don't use any plug-ins, so essentially this enable me to do all my AVCHD work in 8.1 now. I have an Intel Q9450 quad CPU and see frame rates of nearly 29.97 with HDV (m2t) files; but with AVCHD (m2ts) files the frame rates drop into the single-digit range when there's any kind of motion in the track. But now with version 8.1 on the 64-bit side, HDV frame rates are solid at 29.97fps, and AVCHD files *rarely* drop below about 28fps--certainly nothing to show any kind of motion freeze in the preview window.

As I said, I purchased UpShift last weekend and regret doing so. It was virtually a waste of $50. There are several problems with the application at this point as that thread indicates; and it's not just me having problems. However once the VASST and NBFX folks get the bugs worked out, it should be a great asset to AVCHD users--I just wish they hadn't charged me $50 for what amounts to no more than a Beta version; and a weak one at that.

Caveat emptor, I suppose.

Thanks everyone. I got the HF100 and from initial testing it seems to edit very smoothly on my PC. =)
