Can not add video to timeline

First let me give you context. My wife had the brilliant idea of making a video for her 80 year old moms bday with all 6 sisters and grand kids recording videos which I am suppose to make into one dvd to play at her party. I spent 1.5 hours trying to get the first 30 sec .mpg on the timeline... I have 3 weeks and at least 14 clips headed in my direction ... mercy!

So, back to my dilemma with this mpg file. I downloaded a program to convert to .avi and found that only the audio portion of the clip would load(half way there..not lol). The clip plays on Windows Media player. I've read about the codecs at Codec.com and have a very shallow understanding. Since it is likely I will be getting clips recorded on dif devices and such, I assume I will need to standardize all of them to a common format or codec(which one and with what software?) in order to then work the clips into the timeline. or could I place a wmv file and mepeg and when renderd for dvd it all gets standardized?
So a few questions:
1. I know this clip is MPEG-PS (see below) taken with a Canon Dig camera
2. What steps would I take to convert it to a more common codec/format and which would be the easiest to work with.
3. Am I going about this the right way.. ? any advice would be truly appreciatted. Working with Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 8.0b (Build 122).

This is how this clip is identified... is it obvious why Vegas will not work with it? If so what is needed?
