Assuming you are rendering to MPEG-2 (which you should be) you should be using the DVD Arch PAL template, not the default template. Normally, the defaults in the DVD Arch templates are such that you should easily get 30 minutes of video on a DVD.

Who is telling you there's too much? If it's DVDA and you're feeding it DV AVI, then it could simply be overestimating things (which DVDA does have a tendency to do).

Also be aware that pcm audio is big space hog. If you are using pcm you might consider rendering the audio in AC3.

Other than the other comments posted...

Does your video have alot of noise? That will increase the amount of space
your mpegs take up. When I switched to a better camera I was able to store about
30% more on a disc. You may need to search for older posts about noise filter
plug-ins and VHS tape.

Other than that AC3 for audio was a big help.
