Can someone explain ripple editing?

I am makeing a video with mostly stills on the main video track. The overlay track has text explaining what each picture is. I would like to be able to add or remove pictures or video in the middle of this project. I think ripple edits should do it but I have read the manual and the help file and I just don't get it. It seems like you have to add your media to the end of the project so you can cut it, then paste it where you want with ripple editing on. If this is right it seems odd to me.

The way I have been doing it is grouping each text to each picture, selecting to end so I can move the entire video back and forth and maintain my text to the correct picture.

It seems ripple editing should do this better and easier.

Tim,

You're on the right track. Ripple edit will insert media into a track at the cursor position and will push the rest of the media to the right. The key is that you group together what you want pushed to the right so they move together. So, by grouping your text to the still, you have done the first part. All you have to do is make sure ripple edit is on when you insert another still.
