Can someone explain these Mpeg encoder results

I'm just experimenting with creating DVDs from some HI8 footage I captured with Vegas. I've used the MainConcept Mpeg codec 1.4 to convert the DV files into Mpeg2. What I discovered was that I got better results with deinterlacing turned off, the images are crisper and seem generaly more pleasing to the eye when I watch the burned DVD on TV. I am a bit confused by this because the default setting for creating DVD compatible Mpegs is to have deinterlacing switched on. I thought this would be the correct setting for best results. I would appreciate any explanation of why I am getting these results

Here's the short story: do not deinterlace your video! Your television is an interlaced device, and DVD and DVD players are designed to output interlaced material as well. If your original source is interlaced (which your Hi8 camcorder most certainly is), deinterlacing will cause obvious visual problems because you're trying to combine two fields that are capturing different visual information at different points in time.

Do not deinterlace your video.

I totally agree.

The only time to deinterlace is if you will be projecting on a progressive display ONLY. Your computer screen is progressive, and some HD TVs, and some high-end projection TV systems can display progressive output. You also must have a DVD player connected to one of these progressive displays that is capable of putting out progressive output.
