Can't access all of mpeg2 in Vegas?

A friend burnt me a DVD of some DV footage (with a set-top DVD burner - not sure what kind). I copied the .vob file off it and renamed it to mpeg.

I can play it fine in windows media player, but the progress bar at the bottom stops at around 15 minutes... there's at least half an hour of footage, and it continues to play while the slider/progress thingy is at the far right.

If I open the clip in Vegas, I can only access the first 15 minutes of the footage. I'm trying to re-render it as DV, so I can edit with it.

So I guess something is screwed up with the timing in the footage. Any clue what is going on, and how to fix it?

I've just found that I'm able to access pieces past 15 minutes by chopping the clip in two on the time line, for example, but Vegas keeps hanging (I guess it's just real slow) as I try to find the right spot. It's basically un-usable.

I think I'll be able to find the footage I want eventually, but I'm just kind of curious if anyone can explain what I'm seeing.

You may need to "demux" the file to get just the video portion. That VOB file contains lots of things, and depending on the authoring program, some players may not be able to play it. Also, if Media Player isn't able to show the correct time, there may be other issues. Try TMPGEnc and use its "Tools" to demux and see if that helps.

Wow, that was a quick response.. thanks!
I downloaded TMPGEnc and de-multiplexed the file.
It made an .mp2 and a .m2v file. It looks like they have the footage I'm trying to get to. Unfortunately, I can't open the m2v file in Vegas. I can watch it in WMP though. How can I get Vegas to open it?

Ok, I figured it out myself... I re-multiplexed it as just the video stream. Now I can open it in Vegas.

thanks!
