Same problem here. Ive got a HP DVD200i which works fine wth all my other programs but MS doesnt seem to recognize and the "Burn it to DVD" option is grayed out. Are you using the trial version? I am using the trial and think it may be a function not available in the trial version.

I have not confirmed this since I have MS full ver installed.... but it would make sense that the trial does not burn DVDs since the DVD authoring is done via a seperate 3rd party tool called myDVD.

MyDVD is installed seperately in the registered version install.

Thanks, I think you are correct as I dont recall myDVD being installed when I installed the trial. BTW, since you have the full registered version, can you tell me if MS can create the VOB/BUF/IFO files on the HD instead of direct burning to DVD disc?

I dont think it will do native files to hard disk like that... it does offer a print to tape where you can export your project back to DV tape however.

If you need to export to native files to your hard disk, I think you'll need vegas.

I'm at the office so I can't check right now but I believe you can write the DVD files (VOB's, etc) to your hard drive using myDVD (rather than going straight to burning the DVD). If someone else doesn't confirm it I'll give it a try when I get home this evening.

Sorry about the delay - didn't get a chance until today....
Yes you can create what myDVD calls a DVD Volume which is an image of the files from a DVD (VOB's, etc). You can then use any burner software to copy the files to the DVD. It's found under "Tools" > "Make DVD Folder"

Thanks Walleye. The only thing holding me back now is the lack of menuing. I have been considering using MS along with another program to do the menus but I think I am going to keep looking for another all-in-one replacement for S8.

perhaps i'm missing something here. you might be throwing the baby out with the bath water.

mydvd isn't the greatest application around and it isn't integrated but it does work and does create menus. you can probably get an idea of what it does by poking around at mydvd.com and reading the specs for mydvd 5 (although the version that comes with movie studio is 4.5 so it isn't as fully featured).

i'm not sure how complicated you want your menus to be but they are definitely possible.

As mbryant points out in a more recent post, basic menuing is possible if each "chapter" is rendered into a seperate file in MS and then brought in to myDVD. Seems like alot of extra work if you have many chapters and even then the results are less than desirable. Ill check out DVDLab and Ulead Movie Factory.

I am also using the Demo and having the same problem. Can anyone confirm that this feature is not available with the Demo?

When you buy the boxed version of MS, you get 2 programs - MS and the authoring program "MyDVD". MyDVD isn't downloadable, so the option to author DVDs isn't available. Search the forum for MyDVD to get an idea of what you're missing, but it's not highly regarded. MS itself though is in a league of its own, so many people simply replace MyDVD with something more to their liking.
