Can't burn BD or create .iso - Message Missing Err

stevecrye wrote on 9/21/2011, 10:45 PM
Well, as I wait endlesslly for Sony Tech support to get around to answering (after all they are SOOOO very busy with the "well received Sony Vegas 10 - a week or two before releasing Vegas 11 - what a joke!), I thought I would post the contents of my unanswered question here, for everyone's amusement.

BTW, the latest thing I tried, after yet another try at deep-registry diving and ripping out ton's of MS stuff, was to try the good old DVDA 5.0b. Sure enough, it works fine ... I'm holding off on the image restore from 7/11/2011 because I want to rub the crappy software coding in the face of the poor shmuck who finally does respond (with a lame suggestion to try something I have already tried)

---- my support question, with updates, still sitting in a "new" state ----
Hi;

I'm a computer professional and I have already tried the fix in this link:
https://www.custcenter.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/5044/kw/80131604

In addition, I have done a full uninstall, purged the registry and file system of all traces of DVDA 5.2, then re-installed.

I had been using build 124 for about a year with no problems when suddenly last week this problem started. I've even go so far as to use Win7 system restore to take my computer back to a point when the problem was not happening, but nothing fixes it.

I also use Vegas Pro 10e x64. I'm not sure if the DVDA problem started after the upgrade from 10d to 10e.

I am at the end of my rope. I can't do any DVD authoring!

Please don't just have me try things I've already done. Many other people have this Message Missing Error 0X80131604 problem, it is not confined to just DVDA Studio 5.0 (Check the various forums such as Creative Cow).

I suspect that a recent Microsoft Windows Update might be breaking DVDA.

Here is my system info:

--- first update I posted ----

As I continue to struggle, I followed this Sony KB article to the letter:
https://www.custcenter.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/4535

However, it did not fix the problem, and now I have a new error, which happens immediately when I try to use DVDA to create the BD .iso:

Warning: An error occurred while writing a file.
An invalid argument was specified.
<ok>

I'm desperate to get this fixed - I have deadlines and can't get my work done!!! This is a HORRIBLE failure of the software, I'll probably open a paid incident for this IN ADDITION to insisting you follow through on this ticket.

Here are the contents of the FFCache_x86_1033.ini :

----- 2nd update I posted -----

Hi;

I have Symantec Ghost Solution Suite (Enterprise version), and I use it regularly to make complete disk images of my C: Win7 drive. As a sanity check, I used an image that I had created on July 11, 2011 to clone a new disk, and then I made it bootable. (I have one of those external SASA bays so it is easy to swap SATA drives in and out).

When booted to the clone, DVDA 5.2 works perfectly, I just tested by burning a saved .dar BD project. This proves we have a 100% software problem and that there is nothing wrong with the hardware. Of course, I do not want to have to go back to the July 11 config and loose all the work between then and now, so we still have to fix the DVDA problem.

However, I noticed something that might have bearing on the troubleshooting. Between July 11 and a week ago when the DVDA problems started, I had grown weary of the default path to projects (steve/My Documents/DVD Architect Pro 5.2 Projects), and had created quite a few folders under c:\ such as c:\temp-dvd1 , c:\temp-BD1 , etc. This worked OK for until early September. Before I started to experience the Message Missing Error 0X80131604 , I was having very strange problems where I would prepare or prepare/burn a BD project, and part way through DVDA would tell me it "could not write a file - a file with that name already exists". I made sure that I was picking unique names that had never existed on the system, but that did not make any difference. In an effort to fix the problem, I tried deleting, re-installing, and following the various KB articles. It was only after those attempts that the Message Missing Error 0X80131604 started. Could it be that DVDA is confused about paths? I have already tried holding ctrl-shift while launching to reset everything to defaults.

In between the last time DVDA worked and the time the problems started, I had installed several other programs, all of which I have uninstalled as I work on the problem:
The Nessus network scanner (Nessus-4.4.1-amd64.msi) , The Retina Community Network Scanner from eeye.com (RetinaCommunity_EN.exe), the Latest Cam Studio (CamStudio_Setup_v2.6b_r294_(build_24Oct2010).exe) , MagniGlass screen magnifier (MagniGlassWorker_setup.zip), the latest YouTube downloader (YouTubeDownloaderSetup33.exe), the latest, an HP USB boot utility (SP27608.exe) Media Player Classic 9MPC-HomeCinema.1.5.2.3456.x64.exe), and the latest Sony PMB (PMB56_Updater1105a.exe). I mention these because some of them might have also installed things such as MS C++ redistributable or various .NET 4.x components. However, the know good configuration from July 11 does include the MD C++ 2010 and some .NET 4.0 stuff.

Hope this helps, I will do everything in my ability to help figure it out so that we can help other Vegas Pro/ DVDA customers. I still suspect a Windows auto-update broke something.

Thanks,

Steve

------ my most recent update .... notice it is not as polite and positve ...

Four days and still no answer? And the auto-response is still the lame " Vegas 10 is so popular we can't keep up with the tickets"? This a week or two before the launch of Vegas 11?!?

Does Sony really give a %^$%$# about its current customers?

COME ON ANSWER THE DAMN QUESTION!!!

Disgusted,

Steve

If you think a Windows update caused the problem, then a system restore to before the update should fix the problem.

HI;

You missed that from my post (I know it is horribly long) - system restore was one of the 1st things I tried. It got rid of the "Message Missing Error 0X80131604" problem, but introduced others, such as the bizzare "cannot write file - another file with that name exisits"

Anyway, if I get desperate, I'll do a full GHOST Image restore. Much better than system restore. (You might have missed that I took the 7/11/2011 image and put it an another drive, booted from it, and all was OK).

However, build 133 * seems * to have fixed this horrible problem ... proving my suspicion all along that this was a bug in Sony's code.

Still no response from Sony. I'll wait until Monday, then I will call the line that they always answer - the one where you buy new software, and tell them that I ain't gonna buy anything until they respond to my tech support request.

I've had to do that twice before to force them to answer!

"Message Missing Error 0X80"

First, speaking from first hand experience as a tech support manager in a former life, long emails full of unrequested information is a waste of time, and likely counter-productive. Somehow, it was always the people with the better attitude that got better response. It wasn't supposed to be that way, but that's what always happened.

How can it be Sony's code when thousands of users don't seem to share your problem? If it were a code error, wouldn't you expect all users to have the same problem?
PeterDuke wrote on 9/23/2011, 9:39 PM
Yes build 132 had problems which hopefully have been fixed in build 133.
stevecrye wrote on 9/26/2011, 10:12 PM
I am a CURRENT tech support manager.

I placed as much info as possible in the incident when I opened it to avoid them asking for things that I KNEW they would ask for later, based on previous struggles where I waited a week only to have them ask for something trivial. More info is always good.

My attitude was VERY positive and hopefull for the first 4 days - which you would know if you bothered to read my posts. It went south (and is headed further south) because they still have NOT ANSWERED.

So - when you were a manager, you deliberately ignored older incidents just because they were "too long?!?" If so, I'm glad you are no longer a tech support manager. Reading skills are important in a manager.

If I let an incident languish more than 5 days, it will trigger an email to MY boss, and I will have some explaining to do!

BTW STILL no answer , now 11 days since the incident was opened.

and BTW, the fact that build 133 FIXED it is proof it WAS a code error, and, if you had read the bug fix list in build 133, you would know that it WAS affecting other users.

Yeah, you probably got confused by the heading on the main SCS Forum page:

Steve Mann wrote on 9/27/2011, 9:56 AM
"So - when you were a manager, you deliberately ignored older incidents just because they were "too long?!?""
No, in fact my emphasis was exactly the opposite. In our daily morning briefings with my support team, I always got on their case if an incident had gone two days without a response. If there was no resolution in five days, we asked the engineering department to investigate. In fairness our customer base was small and usually consisted of design engineers, so our requests for help were pretty well thought out before they came in.

I did notice a pattern, though, that tickets with long lists of details were ignored by the support staff and no amount of "talking to them" seemed to make much difference for long. I even went as far as to let one go because his unresponded ticket list just kept growing.

Neither you nor I have any inside scoop on how SCS support works, but here's some observations I've made over the past ten years. First, hostile users will likely be lost in the system. (I don't recall saying that your post was hostile). Second, SCS won't fix your computer. If the posts on the forums is any indication, a significantly large number of posts, and by extrapolation, support calls, are usually for PC problems - not product problems. To their credit when there was a true bug (generated text problem a couple of years ago comes to mind) that affected every user (easy to replicate), then a fixed release was pretty quick. When they acknowledge a bug, but they can't replicate it (like the media substitution problem), what can they do??

How is it that when Apple mucks with QT, everyone correctly points the finger of blame at Apple for the resulting problems. [Well, almost everyone, we still see the occasional post of "I upgraded iTunes in my editing PC and now when I encode .mov files, Vegas crashes"]. When Microsoft breaks something in a .net process and people get a 0X80 error, then it has to be Sony's fault?? (Installing the new version probably also reinstalled the .net version that Vegas wants).
