Can't capture anymore?

libralion wrote on 1/27/2005, 1:19 AM
Hello all,
I always could capture fine, but now the capture stops after 3, 4 or sometomes 8 minutes. What could be the problem?
I have an Acedvio card from Canopus and I have Vegas 5. I capture from an HI8 camera and also from my VCR.
I have Windows XP with service pack 1.
I already deleted Vegas and reinstalled it, but still the capture stops at some time.
What can I do?

two things to check ...

room on designated capture drive?

Max Capture setting ? (Capture Video / Options / Preferences /Capture - Maximum capture length)

Check you have enough hard disc space. Check your preference settings within Video Capture. If you have more than one hard disc you use for capturing to, make sure that the settings in Disk Management in VidCap are what you wish. Having 2 capture folders on 2 separate HDs, capturing will start with the first one in the list AND if that has REACHED its limit "Overflow" setting the next HD on the list will be selected. Now if THAT one is full then I could potentially see a problem.

Ok .. . Have you done some housekeeping on the Capturing discs lately? Maybe you have many defragged files on your Video HDs? This could get in the way. I start a new project by doing a very thorough clean sweep of Discs.

Get back to us .. this is all I can think of as starters .. others will chip in . .

I have enough HD space(about 80 GB) and the minimun length thing is unchecked. I don't know what to do anymore.
Anybody any further suggestions?

Johanna - nasty .. . ok ..

Can you capture in something simple like Windows Movie Maker? Lets see if it IS an issue with Vegas first - yeah? Still might be Vegas but lets see if all your firewire stuff is happenning - yeah?

it is also happening in Windows moviemaker, so it is not a problem of Vegas 5 alone. I also see that the capture is split up in sometimes 2 files, sometimes 3 files.
I don't recall having changed anything on my computer, but obviously something is wrong. But I don't know where to look for it.

Can it be some fault in the vidcap settings? And if so what to do about it?

Can you now do a "live" capture to your hard disc? Put the camera into record mode with a connection via f/w to your pc. See if you get a continuous video stream coming into the video capture preview in Windows MM or Vegas VidCap. Let's see if the stream is continous - yeah? See if you can at least capture this "live" stream onto your pc. Just a small length .. maybe 3 minutes .. yeah?

I am at work now, so I can't do that right now, but only in a couple of hours. But I don't see what you mean. I capture from my HI8 camera or my VCR in my capture card(Acedvio card). I never used the firewire method before and I don't think I have the right cables etc. for it.

Yes of course, my mistake. Use your exsisting cable to connect to your pc, and try and do a live capture.

Ok I will try and get back to you in about 3 hours.

Ok I captured live and that is ok. No problem.
I also captured from my vcr and that went ok also.
Only the capture from my HI8 camera won't work.
I don't understand since the camera runs good. Only the capture stops after a couple of minutes.
Is there anything else I can try? I also changed the cables, but that didnpt work either.
Any further suggestions?
