Can't capture video from my camera

I'm hoping someone here can help me out. I just had a Firewire card (Creative I/O IEEE 1394a PCI card) installed on my Windows XP machine. I plugged the firewire cable into the computer and the camera, turned the camera on, and went into Vegas' Video capture. But it just tells me to "Please connect a device".

Is there something I can do to test whether the card was properly installed? Or is there something really obvious I'm missing?

Thanks in advance for any assistance you guys can provide!

I don't have XP, but I've seen this question asked a lot lately. Do a search on XP, service pack 2. I believe one of the windows service packs messed it up and you have to find an additional fix for this, but it depends on which service pack you have installed. Also, wait for an experienced user to answer this. But if you can't wait, do the search.

Yes, I am running XP SP2. I scanned thru some of the previous posts where folks are having XP SP2 + Firewire card problems. I'm beginning to get really concerned....

Pardon my total ignorance here, but is there somewhere thru the Windows 'Control Panel' or elsewhere that I could verify whether the card was properly installed? For all I know, the guy who installed it for me (who I'll probably end up having to call tomorrow) might have left the 'main wire' unhooked.

At any rate, thanks for the response. Hopefully one of you guys'll come up with something that'll rescue me!

Look in the device manager (My Computer/Properties/Hardware/Device Manager)

Look for the IEEE 1394 Adaptor.
