Can't detect device to print to tape

I'm a newbie to Vegas, and am trying to print to tape for the first time. I keep getting a box that pops up when things are about to print to tape. It says "Your device is offline, please reconnect it and click ok". I'm trying to print to DV tape with a JVC BR-DV600U deck using firewire connect. Somehow Vegas is not recognizing the deck. It's the same deck I used to capture footage into Vegas. Is there something I may be doing wrong? Perhaps some other connections other than firewire need to be made with the deck? Thanks for any suggestions.

Check to make sure the deck is set for "DV In" rather than "DV Out." I'm not familiar with your deck, but with mine that's a must do.

The deck doesn't have a "DV in" or "DV out" setting, just a DV- In/Out port on the back of the deck,....but there is a specific setting called "Video Input Select" in which you can set it for "Line", Y/C, Component, or IEEE 1394. I have it set for IEEE 1394. I'm still perplexed as what is not configuring correctly, but thanks for your suggestion anyway.

OK, try this. While the "Your device is off-line" message is showing, unplug the firewire from the deck. Then plug it back in. You should get an audio response (chimes) and the window that say's a new device has been installed and asks what you want to do now. Click on the bottom icon (do nothing), close the window, and then see if the device off-line box disappears when you click on o.k.

I've found that sometimes Vegas doesn't recognize that the connection exists, even when I know it does. Unplugging and replugging seems to wake up the program. On occasion it has been necessary to exit Vegas and reboot.

If that doesn't work, look through Tools/Preferences (if you haven't already) to see if anything there might be incorrectly set.

One final remote possibility: is the safety on your tape set to the "Save" or the "Record" position?

Just some trouble shooting thoughts. Hope one of them works.

Hey Jack...
You just solved my problem!! Thank you so much!!
I tried unplugging and reconnecting again, but continued to get the same "device is off-line" box. I checked my tape to be sure the tab was in the "record" position, which it was. So I finally I went into Vegas' "Options".....down to "Preferences".......clicked on the "Video Device" tab and changed "Device" from "Video for Windows Standard" to "OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394", and that did the trick! I was able to succesfully complete my first "print to tape" using Vegas. It was a 3 minute sample just to see how things would look printing to DV tape.
Thanks again, Jack, ........this is my first post to this forum, and it certainly has been worthwhile. No doubt I'll be back again, and maybe someday I'll be of help to someone else, as you have to me.
Best to you,
Roxy11

Congratulations! Glad you finally got it to work.

You're right, too. The Bulletin Board is one of the many things that makes working with VV such a pleasure. A great program, with great folks helping each other through the tough spots.

Hang in there.
