Custom? What file type are you choosing in the first "Render As" dialog box? You should be scrolling down to Windows Media Video there before clicking the Custom button.

Sorry I forgot to mention, I did all that..
Choose render as > wmv >set custom setting > but could not find anything under the video tab, format.

If I just proceed to render with any setting, I will get a program error

Are you running Windows XP with SP1 by any chance? Or have you installed Windows Media Player 9? If so, try installing the following and see if it fixes it:

I installed the patch you cited. The WMV renders perfectly now. Thanks for finding and posting this patch for us.
