Can't find effects

donald_cady wrote on 10/23/2007, 10:44 AM
When I click on the video event fx icon on the film clip to attach video effects, none of the effects show up when the plugin window appears. When I click on the pull-down arrow, there is a folder with three squares beside it. I know I have the effects because I checked the folder on the "C" drive and I see them. They just appear when I click on the video event fx icon on the film clip. Do I need to uninstall and re-install? Or is this a computer problem?

You may want to restart VMS while holding down CTRL+SHIFT. This will reset VMS in its original virgin installation.

I tried this but whether I'm still getting the picture of a folder and three boxes (squares) right beside it. I re-installed, and I also uninstalled my Platinum 7 and loaded Platinum only. My video efects and audio effects do not appear in the plugin window. How do I find a way to connect the effects folders to where they're supposed to go?

Question
All transitions, FX, text rolls etc. have disappeared from the VideoFactory/Vegas interface.
Answer
This may have something do with a faulty registration of a system component file called atl.dll. ATL functionality allows developers alternate implementations for several of the commonly used runtime functions that could possibly require costly startup code. It allows for quicker implementation of the application. The atl.dll is the actual dynamic link library that covers this code, and the version on your PC may not be current with what we are enforcing. Correcting the problem involves two sets of steps.

Part one: Unregistering and registering atl.dll

1. Open a Windows Search interface. (From the Start menu, choose Find or Search, and choose Files or Folders from the submenu. Alternately, press the Windows key + F.)
2. Search for the file called atl.dll. Note the pathway to the file so you can get to it directly later.
3. Open the Sony Media Software application that has lost the use of transitions/FX/etc.
4. Open Windows Explorer. (From the Start menu, choose Programs, and choose Windows Explorer from the submenu. Alternately, press the Windows key + E.)
5. Resize the Windows Explorer window so that you see the Sony Media Software application directly behind it.
6. In Windows Explorer, navigate to the location where the atl.dll system file is stored (usually found in C:\WINNT\system32 or C:\Windows\System32).
7. Drag the atl.dll file from Windows Explorer to the Sony Media Software application timeline. A plus sign (+) appears next to the mouse cursor as you drag.
8. After dropping the file on the Sony Media Software application, the following message appears: "The file c:\WINNT\system32\atl.dll is a DirectX Plug-In that supports self registration. ____ can automatically register this plug-in for use with all DirectX compatible applications. Would you like to register it now (click NO to un-register)." Click No to unregister the plug-in.
9. Drag the atl.dll file from Windows Explorer to the Sony Media Software application a second time.
10. When the same message appears, click Yes to register the file correctly.

Part two: Manually registering plug-in DLLs

1. In Windows Explorer, navigate to the following location: C:\Program Files\Sony\Shared Plug-Ins\Video.
2. In this folder you'll see the following two files: sfpagepeel.dll and sftrans.dll. Drag these two files onto the Sony Media Software interface.
3. The same message appears, prompting you to register the plug-ins. Click No to unregister the plug-ins.
4. Drag the same two files to the Sony Media Software interface a second time.
5. When the same message appears, click Yes to register the plug-ins.

If you continue to have a problem after doing all of the above (meaning you still do not have any transitions or FX in the Sony Media Software application), please contact technical support for further assistance.

Donald,

I think I can help you. Based on your description, I had this exact same problem when I first installed the application (back in May 07). I tried uninstalling and reinstalling multiple times, all to no avail. I opened a support call with Sony, and here was the results.

Support recommended that I uninstall the application. Then create a brand new, completely clean "admin" user account on the computer. Then re-install using that clean admin account. Once I did this, the problem was resolved. Support had told me at the time that using the existing admin account on my system (the one I originally tried to use when installing) would not work in some scenarios. The reasons were not given to me. Who cares - all I know is installing from the clean admin account resulted in a clean install, including resolving the FX problem you mentioned.

Hope that helps!
