Can't get .ASF file to play in Vegas

Hi all,

I have an .ASF file that was created by scraping a streaming WMV off the Internet using Replay A/V. The file plays perfectly in Windows Media Player, yet the audio and video tracks show as empty red tracks in Vegas. Can anyone advise as to what steps are needed to get this file working in Vegas? I tried to install some .ASF codecs, but I get a message warning that I'm overwriting a newer file. So I aborted that.

Any help is much appreciated.

Thanks,
Scott

You could try making a copy of it and then renaming the copy with a wmv extension? Is an ASF the actual media or is it just a control file? What happens when you look at it in Notepad? How big is the file?

Actually, I did try renaming it as a WMV file, but no luck. It's a 6 MB file.

I just don't understand why I can play it in WMP but not in Vegas.

Well, looking around the web (your job, btw), I see that ASF can include several encoding formats including but not limited to WMV, and it supports DRM. So perhaps the author never intended it to be shared?
