Can't get stills at 720x480 - help!

OK, I've read posts on this but still can't capture still pictures in VV3 from my JVC DV camcorder at 720x480, or even 640x480. They always capture at 327x240 or something like that. And if I uncheck the box for JPG to save them as BMP, then most of my picture programs will not open them. (Photoshop, MS Photo Editor, etc) I can't seem to get the preview window to 720x480 in the capture program. I right click and try 100% but it doesn't get any bigger. I can get the preview window in the main section of VV3 to be 720x480, but then I don't have any space to work in. I am running my monitor at 1024x768 though. I have preview selected as "best" quality. I can only capture stills as JPG and 327x240 and they are too small to use. Then the BMP stills I can get are also 327x240, but can't be opened by my photo programs. Help! What Am I missing?

Thanks

Mark

You should switch to the "Best" quality for preview and then select "Display at Project Size" from the right click menu.

In addition to tserface and derg's comments, make sure your project size in properties is 720x480.

Like derg said, you will not be able to get a full 720x480 res, but you can fix this with the pan/crop tool.

No need to use pan/crop. Just make sure the still is using DV aspect ration when it's on the timeline and it will fill the screen.
Also, you do not need to make your preview window full 720x480 in size. Just have it a project properties is enough.

To create stills from DV (NTSC):

1) Open Vegas, set the project to NTSC DV.

2) Launch Video Capture from Vegas, and capture the clips from DV tape. The captured clips will be loaded into the Vegas media pool. (You can capture still from Vidcap, but the method described here gives you more control and saves wear and tear on the camera and tape.)

4) Load the clips on the Vegas timeline

5) Tear off the video preview window and size it to 720x480 (full screen). Set preview quality to best. Right click inside the Vegas Video preview window and check "display at project size".

6) Move the timeline cursor to the frame you want to capture. Alt+L/R arrow keys move the cursor in one frame increments.

7) When you have found the frame you want, click "Save timeline snapshot to file" in the video preview window. You can save as .jpeg or .png- .png is better because it is not as lossy as jpeg (the file size will be a little bigger).

Note:The captured still will be pixel aspect corrected, meaning for DV it will not be 720x480, it will be 654x480, and will look correct in Photoshop. The inverse is also true- create stills that you will be bringing into Vegas at 655x480.

While this may seem like quite a few steps, remember that Vegas gives you get a wysiwyg preview before the still is saved- if adjustments (color, interlaced flicker etc) are needed, you can see what the still will look like before capturing. If you capture a still from QT pro (which you can do in one step), you never know exactly what you've saved until you look at the still.
