Can't Import Indeo® video 4.4 AVI Clips

Customer wants me to convert a bunch of short AVI clips originally compressed with Indeo® video 4.4 Decompression Filter so he can use them.

They play in my version of Windows Media Player 9 (that's how I know the codec originally used) but will not imprt or play in Vegas. I hear the audio, but cannot see the video. Imports audio to the line, but doesn't even creat a video line at all.

How do I make Vegas smart enough to see Indeo® video 4.4?

I thought Vegas was AVI based....

Go to www.driverguide.com and download indeo codecs by Intel, get the latest free one, I believe it is called ie51.

Man, that was fast! Thanks.

How do I install the codec? Vegas Help doesn't even have "codec" in the list.

Just download and execute file. I believe it installs in the dir Wins dir. system32. on startup, Vegas will find them for the video clips.

By the way, I learned a lot about Indeo in this process. Intel (inventor of Indeo) no longer supports it and no hint of Indeo is on the Intel website. Windows XP no longer supports Indeo at all. That was our problem. Our training dept upgraded to XP and all the Indeo 4.4 encoded clips that were about 9 years old would not play. I was asked to re-encode them to MPEG-1. But I could not see the in Vegas 5.

The Indeo codec that worked (at least under Windows 2000 and Vegas 5 was a codec called iv5setup.exe. I think it's the last official Intel Indeo update before they lost interest. Google to find it. There are several places.

I don't know if it works under Windows XP SP2 or not.

It installs simply and professionally using Installshield from Intel. Not some weird homemade software. Has caused no known problems under Win2000Pro.

Vegas was able to import the Indeo 4.4 files (each about one minute long) instantly then render them out as MPEG-1 in about 15 seconds each. Worked great.

This is also covered in Knowledge Base article 919 (you can search on Indeo to find it). That article includes a link to a Microsoft update patch which installs the Indeo codec.

The .avi clips on the MovieStudio CD won't play on my system. Why?
