Can't Import MJPEG AVI Files

stevefoobar wrote on 3/15/2010, 1:45 AM
I haven't used Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 9.0b for some time and when I tried to use it yesterday to import MJPEG AVI files, it failed. The audio track imports OK but there is no video track.

Does anyone know what's going on? These are pretty standard HD MJPEG AVI files and they used to import fine. They also import and work perfectly in Pinnacle Studio.

Thanks!

I followed your instructions to the letter and unfortunately, still have the exact same problem. The audio track comes in but not the video track.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

If what you want to do is open MJPEG files in Vegas, you may want to try this free solution (a watermark is added only if you encode with it):
http://www.mainconcept.com/site/prosumer-products-4/motion-jpeg-codec-785/demo-version-789.html

And, you may also want to read this thread in the Vegas Professional forum in its entirety:
http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/forums/ShowMessage.asp?MessageID=701063&Replies=12

And sorry you had the same experience with MJPEG in ffdshow that I did (and I also wish you far better luck uninstalling it than I had) . . .

Steve, my solution works, 100%. If you still can't get MJPEG AVI on Vegas is because you either didn't enable the codec in the ffdshow panel, or you forgot to reload Vegas to read the new codecs.

Eugenia, what do you mean by "reload Vegas"? I can't believe that I need to uninstall and re-install Vegas every time I add or remove a codec. That's crazy.

Of course, I closed and reopened it every time. I also (just for good measure) rebooted the computer and it still didn't work.

I actually downloaded and tried at least 4 free mjpeg codecs and the ONLY one that worked for me (without rebooting the computer or reinstalling Vegas) was this one:

I never said to re-install Vegas. Reloading means "reload in RAM", aka "re-open".

That codec pack you installed is very old, and possibly very buggy. The links I included are newest versions of these codecs, and I say again, they do work. You must be doing something wrong. But now, after you have installed so many things on your PC, I'd refrain from giving you more info, because I'd like to avoid more medley-ing.

Thanks Eugenia. Yes, I know it works because I used to have it on my system months ago and it was working in Vegas. Now it refuses to work no matter what I do. I'm not doing anything wrong--I'm a very experienced computer user.

I'll probably never know what's going on but at least the older codec works for now. So does the Main Concept codec but it costs $30 so I think I'll stick with the older free one. I'm noticing no difference in playback speed between the older free codec and the Main Concept codec, much to my surprise.

AFAIK, the MainConcept demo is still free forever. It will open MJPEG files without issue (even my old DC30/DC10+ files), and only add a watermark if you encode with it. jfyi

Yes, I'm aware of that...thanks. I do sometimes encode to MJPEG however, so the watermark isn't acceptable and if I don't have to pay $30, then what the heck...I guess I will use the old free codec.

Yet another report that properly set up ffdshow is no longer opening mjpeg files. Worked fine for me in XP, not working in Windows 7. I'm guessing that those of us who are having trouble with ffdshow also have some piece of consumerist crapware (like Pinnacle) installed which is showing mjpegs fine, and may somehow be blocking mjpeg access to many other codecs. Thanks musicvid for posting the mainconcept demo link, this is working well.

Then it's a Win7 issue. This is why I always stay one generation behind in OS tech when it comes to my video tools. Because of backwards compatibility. To its credit though, windows is more compatible than Mac OS X between major versions.
