Can't import MP3's

A little while ago someone posted about not being able to import MP3's into Vegas. I tried to search for the post but couldn't find it.

Some felt that the problem was just that VBR MP3's couldn't be imported, but now the problem has occurred to me.

CBR MP3's give the error msg 'None of the files dropped on Vegas could be opened'. And in the Render requester, MP3 is no longer an option at all (not just the 56k restriction).

Was a solution ever found?

I found awhile back, that none of the Sony apps can open certain .MP3 files, mine where 192Kbs not VBR. These files where an entire CD. Not sure what app was used that created these files, because my wife downloaded them from the internet. I just ran into this problem again this week and still none of the Sony apps will open them, although I can open them in Windows Media Player and Nero. I tried opening them in WMP and resaving them, but still after this the Sony apps will still not open them. Probably, because WMP doesn't reencode the file. I can open the file in Nero and reencode them to a new .MP3 file, then I can open it in the Sony apps. This has something to do with the app that creates the files writes something in the header information that the Sony .MP3 codec doesn't recognize and therefore can't open the file.

No resolution as of yet, just a work around if you happen to have Nero or another app that is able to open it and reencode it. I first saw this before the release of Sound Forge 7 and Sony said, they would look into fixing the .MP3 codec for that release. It didn't make that release or a Vegas 5 fix, not sure if it will ever get addressed, until another 100 users notice the same problem. Probably just not high enough on the priority list as of now.

Well, if it's a matter of it getting noticed, count me in. I run into this all the time and just end up exporting to wav from winamp.

Any word on a fix Sony?

Happens to me a lot - even with mp3s i believe i encoded myself using musicmatch.

Whats really cooking my pickles is that i have a 512meg mp3 file (44k 16 bit)
Total runtime is like 18 hours. It plays fine in Windows Media Player.

I tired the nero workaround - but it only reencodes 4:30 hours of it for some reason - same with music match jutebox.... Any one know of a good encoder (free preferably ) I could use to re-encode this?

(for the record, i want to chop it up into smaller segments - bitrate is fine)
