I'm trying to import a video file that Windows Media Player 11 can play, despite first warning me that it doesn't recognize the file format. As is, VMS can import only the audio track; Windows Movie Maker fails to import it with an "unspecified error". Properties didn't tell me anything, so I examined the file with Notepad and found a reference to "VirtualDub build 13870/release". Via Google I found that VirtualDub is a GNU GPU video processor; I downloaded and installed it assuming that it would at least be able to open the file (and then hopefully allow me to export it in a more generally useful format) but it failed, declaring "Couldn't locate decompressor for format 'WMV3' (unknown) VirtualDub requires a Video for Windows compatible codec to decompress video. DirectShow codecs, such as those used by WMP, are not suitable." I tried following the WMV3 and Video for Windows leads a little, but at this point I figured I should probably just ask people who know much more about all this stuff - please don't tell me WMP, which is free, is more robust than VMS, which isn't, i.e., if WMP can figure out how to deal with file whose format it at first doesn't recognize, surely VMS must be able to do the same? Thanks! DG
