Can't load or play AVI in Vegas 4.0

bones wrote on 6/6/2003, 3:34 PM
I am trying to load and play (and hopefully edit) AVI's that I have
from a digital camera of mine. They are not high quality for sure,
but I thought it would be fun to put some of my own music to the
AVI's...But I can't get them to load and play. When I try other AVI's
that are not from my camera they play no problem. What's different
about the AVI's from my camera? Do I need to convert to another frame
rate? What do I need to look for? I would appreciate any help.

Thanks,
James Rooney

Do you know what codec theyare? Also, can you play them from media player? Goto http://abcavi.tk/ and download the ABCTab editor. it should tell you the codec that the files are.

Download the mjpeg codec, should then work.

Did you use Vegas to capture the video? If not how did you get it on your hard drive? If Vegas can capture it, it should play it. What brand of camera do you have? Did Vegas capture recognize it? Are you capturing through firewire?

If you use XP, you can use WindowsMovieMaker to convert those MVI_AVI Canon files too. That's what I do with my Powershot...
If you don't use WinXP, you can also try Morgan codec or Mainconcept. You have a 30-day trial version with Morgan if my rememberance is good. Then you can buy it; around 30 bucks.

I'm really confused by this thread. Whats eveybody talking about. Are there some digital cameras that Vegas can't capture from? I just hook my camera up to my computer, capture into Vegas, and edit away. I haven't found a codec yet that Vegas couldn't play or edit (including Pinacle). Primere was very picky about what it would edit. Vegas seems to work with anything including MPEGs.

Wboy: good for you! Unfortunately, those of us who use Canon still cameras with AVI recording option can't ... codec is not compatible with Vegas. We have to use a third party codec then render in a Vegas-friendly format to be able to use those clips.

I doubt it will be fixed, even in V5 for one obvious reason, no? ;) Yeah, maybe I dramatize a little now...

Actually, my Canon camera AVI movies loaded right into my computer -- a Sony VAIO tower -- because they preloaded an MJPEG codec from the factory!

Wouldn't you think that the Canon software should come with the codec?!?

P.S. To wobblyboy: We're talking about movies from still cameras, not DV cameras.

I simply copied the .AVI's from my Pentax digital camera via usb. Is there a separate process for Vegas Capture instead of viewing and playing AVI's?

just download the morgan codec(mjpeg) and you be fine.

SonicDennis: now you surprise me! Sony? with Canon? woahh... never thaught it could happen ! lol!
Happy *you* too!
Yes, I over-dramatized... :P
And YES, the Canon software SHOULD come with the codec, for chri554ke!!! And it's obvious to me that their software was developped for GrannySmithers then "adapted" to PCers... I had several dysfunctions with Zoombrowser / Capture under Win2K AND WinXP... mmm, it may be my mobo again though...

But , hell, do they take good pictures compared to few other brands (yes, I campared...).

I got something that works now so to sum it up: use WinMovieMaker in XP to reformat, or Morgan codec with other OSes. :D
