Can't "open copy" of m2t audio from V8 - SF9

Can't "open copy" of m2t audio file from Vegas 8 to Sound Forge 9, get error message (an error occured during the current operation. A necessary function has not been implimented). I can do this procedure with other formats though, such as DV files, etc. Is it a mpeg audio issue? Anyone else ever have trouble with this?

I can verify what you observed. Vegas Pro 8.0c to SF 9.0e (open copy in SF) fails with the same message you see.

I can, however, "open in SF 9" and that does work. Very odd indeed.

Yeah, I sure hope someone from technical chimes in on this issue; or at least someone tells me what dumb thing I didn't do to get this function to work, as I have used this to clean up audio a lot in the past... ;-)

Since you 'found' it, perhaps you should open a ticket with support. That's the official way to go.

It's on its way...

Editing m2t's mpeg-1 layer 3 audio is not such a wise idea even if it worked. It's a very lossy format. Much better to convert from the T/L to a lossless codec such as WAV or PCA first and then edit that.

Agreed, PCM is the way to go. However, you would think that one could at least still use the "open copy" audio function to open the mpeg file into sound forge, like one can do with DV audio files, and then save out as PCM. Without this option, intuitive workflow is upset.

HDV actually uses MPEG-1 Audio Layer 2, not Layer 3 (better known as MP3.) The differences between layer 2 and 3 are noted here:

True, fine.

Apparently, the way to utilize the "Open Copy in Sound Forge" function with m2t HDV audio files, is simply to create a sub-clip and that 48khz wav file will replace the m2t audio file on the timeline and will now work with "Open Copy".

Thank you, me!

While I agree with you that that is a useful workaround, it sorta defeats the whole purpose of "Open Copy...." and further, the error message it brings up, perhaps should say " Hey dummy... didn't you know...." :-(

Not that it's off my chest, should this be a restriction, then perhaps the "Open Copy" needs to be greyed out. I personally still feel this is a bug and should be treated as such, especially since SF can handle the sound format natively. One way or another, since we are truly in the HD world, Vegas Pro and SF must play nice.

"....should this be a restriction,....."

Without trying to think through all the possible scenarios where it might be a vital thing to be able to do I'd suggest not. A warning message if it could be implement with a Disable This Warning Message tick box would suffice.

Update, still haven't heard back from tech support yet...

However, I reinstalled Vegas Pro 8.0b, that version will work as it should by allowing m2t audio files to be directly copied to Sound Forge via "Open Copy in Sound Forge".

So, something seems to be changed in Vegas Pro 8.0c that doesn't currently allow the function to work. Until then, the workaround I described above will do basically the same thing with just one additional mouse click.
