I inserted a video into my project but there was no sound. I downloaded a few codec packages and now when I try to open the project I get the following error:

"I downloaded a few codec packages and now when I try to open the project I get the following error:"

There has been an urban myth floating around this forum that indiscriminately installing "packages" of codecs is a cure-all for opening "all things video" in Vegas. To those for whom this approach works, congratulations. I can assure you from personal experience that this approach does not work for everyone, nor is it a cure-all.

In my experience, installing a codec "package" often does more harm than good, because the installers change codec versions, change registry entries, and often install untested buggy codecs when everything else was working just fine. "Uninstalling" these codec "packages" does not return the registry to its pristine state.

In your case, it looks like a bad DivX codec (and there are plenty of them!) has hosed your Vegas application.

Suggest you do a system restore to before the codec "package" installation, and / or reinstall the Sony applications if necessary, then worry about identifying the specific missing codec and downloading it from its developer only, and not as part of a third party "package." Frankly, some of those "free" codec packages load your machine with spyware and trojans.

Although it involves a bit more work, This Thread may get you started down the right path to taking a more focused approach.

Good Luck!
